Smidt fourth runner-up in Miss Outstanding Teen Georgia competition

Miss Outstanding Teen Valdosta Greta Smidt was named fourth runner-up Friday afternoon in the Miss Outstanding Teen Georgia competition in Columbus.

The 15-year-old rising Georgia Christian School 10th grader also won the Burma Davis Posey Talent Award and a $300 scholarship, said Pat Colson, a Miss Valdosta representative in Columbus.

Smidt performed “Queen of the Night” from Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” which earned her first place in the talent competition Thursday. The performance earned her a prestigious encore presentation for the Miss Georgia banquet.

She was the 10th contestant named for the competition’s Top 10. She then rose to the Top Five. She earned fourth place runner-up out of a field of 36 contestants from across the state.

Miss Teen Georgia was only the second such competition for Smidt, whose first competition was winning the Miss Outstanding Teen Valdosta crown last September.

The daughter of Dr. Renaldas A. Smidtas and Lina Smidt, Greta is scheduled to sing for Pope Benedict XVI next month in Rome with the Renaissance Singers. Her singing also raised more than $13,000 locally to help rebuild schools in the Katrina-ravaged New Orleans parish.

The Miss Georgia competition continues today with an afternoon banquet scheduled to honor Miss Georgia Amanda Kozak, who earned the crown as Miss Valdosta. Valdosta Mayor John Fretti is scheduled to present Kozak with an award as are representatives of Valdosta State University, which is Kozak’s alma mater. Local representatives will also bestow other commemorations on Kozak.

This evening, Kozak will crown a new Miss Georgia. Among the contenders are Miss Valdosta Erin Atcheson and Miss Capital City Leah Massee, who is a 23-year-old VSU student from Fitzgerald. In preliminary rounds, Massee won the talent competition singing “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and was the lifestyle and fitness and swimsuit preliminary winner earlier this week, according to the Associated Press.
