Business This Week: Shopping has never been better

Those who want to wait until Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) to shop will have plenty of terrific bargains to choose from. Although there have supposedly been “leaks” on the Internet of sales circulars for that day, I still would encourage you to check your Thanksgiving paper for sales flyers because you just never know what you might find.

In addition, though, due to the nature of the economy right now, retailers can no longer wait to offer door busters. Every day, you’ll find ads in the paper for any number of incredible sales at a variety of stores this year.

With most everyone on a tight budget this holiday season, it makes sense to make your dollars stretch as far as possible. That may mean starting early this year and getting your shopping done slowly rather than waiting to see how low prices will go. And if you wait too long, those must-have items will all be gone.

One more plug — as much as possible this year, keep your dollars in Valdosta. The money you spend locally comes back to the community through wages paid, jobs created, and sales tax revenue. So whenever possible, please buy it here. And don’t forget the Merry Marketplace at the Conference Center next weekend!

Thanksgiving dinners

A number of area organizations are sponsoring Thanksgiving dinners this year, including an all-faiths group, the 100 Black Men of Valdosta, and various churches. Sam’s Bar-B-Q is also doing his annual free meal for those in need, and is selling Boston Butts to help raise money for the event.

If you are interested in volunteering, contact LAMP, the Salvation Army, and America’s Second Harvest of South Georgia. Buy a roast from Sam. If you have plenty this year, please try and help someone who doesn’t.

Business Roundup

The Creekside Tavern by the Y is opening sometime in the next week to 10 days, once they have everything in place and ready to go.

As for a specific date, the most specific one I’ve gotten is “when the sign says open, come on in.”

The supper club/dance club/restaurant has a pretty extensive menu and there will be live music every night, Wednesday through Saturday.

The former Marco Polo restaurant will soon be the Hibachi Grill and Deluxe Buffet.

The Image Salon has moved to Peachtree Plaza by the theatres, near to where the Children’s Corner moved earlier this year.

I understand there are several new businesses opening in Quitman. Gifted is open and in the former Twisted Sisters building. It’s also a French market and has a deli in the back. Very Vintage, an antique and gift store, is opening in the old Romine Furniture building and there will be a new florist in town soon, too.

It looks like the English Pub is closer to opening. The date I have is mid-December. They’ll be in the former Scoops location on Baytree across from the movie theatres.

I don’t think the Smok’n Pig addition is going to make it open by Thanksgiving, but I’m betting they’ll be done before Christmas.

And despite some folks thinking to the contrary, Hambrick Christmas Tree Farm will be open for business as usual starting on Thanksgiving day for all those who cherish the tradition of cutting down your own live tree for the holiday.

That’s about it for this week, but if you see something I’ve missed, please let me know!
