A magnitude 9.0 earthquake slammed Japan's northeastern coast that day, unleashing a 13-foot (4-meter) tsunami that swept boats, cars, buildings and tons of debris miles inland, severely damaged the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power station and killed nearly 20,000 people.
