VALDOSTA —
A woman is in stable condition at South Georgia Medical Center following a shooting Saturday night in Valdosta, and her live-in boyfriend is facing charges, according to police.
At 9:45 p.m., police responded to 131 Pendleton Ave. on a report of a domestic dispute where someone had been shot, said Cmdr. Brian Childress of the Valdosta Police Department.
Isabel Abad, 26, had been shot in the head, he said.
She was taken to SGMC, and her wounds do not appear to be life-threatening, Childress said.
Both Abad and witnesses told police that her boyfriend, Francisco Hernandez, 29, introduced a handgun into the dispute, which led to her being shot, Childress said. When police arrived, Hernandez had fled the scene, he said.
Shortly after arriving, officers and detectives found Hernandez hiding near the incident location, said Childress.
Hernandez was taken into custody and interviewed by police detectives, Childress said.
“We recovered the weapon involved and have substantial evidence to implicate Hernandez in the shooting,” he said.
Hernandez has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during commission of a crime, both of which fall under the Georgia Family Violence Act, Childress said.
Police are considering filing additional charges at a later date, he said.
“We are thankful the victim is going to be OK,” Childress said. “I want to commend the officers and detectives who were able to take Mr. Hernandez into custody minutes after the incident.”
Childress said there are no other suspects. “We definitely have the shooter involved in the incident,” he said.
