MIAMI —
Forecasters say Hurricane Igor has rapidly strengthened to a Category 4 storm in the open Atlantic. It doesn’t immediately threaten land, but is expected to get stronger as it moves west.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Julia has formed in the Atlantic with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. Sunday night, Julia was located about 110 miles (175 km) southeast of the Cape Verde Islands.
It’s moving around 12 mph to the west-northwest. Julia is expected to strengthen and could become a hurricane this week.
Igor had maximum sustained winds of 150 mph and was moving west at 13 mph. Igor could become a monstrous Category 5 storm at some point today.
The center of the storm was located about 1,065 miles (1,715 km) east of the Northern Leeward Islands.
The storm warning was issued for the southern Cape Verde Islands, including Maio, Sao Tiago, Fogo and Brava.
