VALDOSTA —
In a world where nearly every connected citizen is a member of social media Web sites like Facebook and Twitter, information is easier than every to access. The information that began floating around Twitter Monday morning: the 2013 Valdosta State football schedule.
Although the schedule has not officially been released, the picture, taken by a member of the football team, clearly shows the full 2013 football schedule, posted on the billboard outside of the team's weight room inside the Athletic Fieldhouse.
The start of the 2013 season for Valdosta State starts off with two bye weeks across the first three weeks of the regular season.
The Blazers open the season Aug. 31 with a bye week, before visiting Fort Valley State Sept. 7.
Valdosta State beat Fort Valley State 62-14 in 2012, and has won 17 of the 20 all-time meetings between the two schools. The last time the Blazers visited Fort Valley State was in 2007, winning 69-0.
The week after their game with Fort Valley State, the Blazers will have another bye week Sept. 14, before hosting three straight games at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
The Blazers will play nine straight weekends to close out the regular season, starting with the three games at home.
The home stand starts Sept. 21 against Gulf South Conference foe Shorter, which officially becomes a full-time member this upcoming season. In the only meeting between the two schools, the Blazers won 37-6.
Then, the Blazers will host Angelo State (Sept. 28) and Gulf South Conference newcomer — for football only — Florida Tech, which will be in its first-ever season of football.
The Blazers beat Angelo State 43-10 at Cowboys Stadium in 2012.
Valdosta State's first conference road game comes Oct. 12 at West Georgia, a team the Blazers beat 42-7 in 2012 in Carrollton. The Blazers then visit reigning Gulf South Conference champion West Alabama Oct. 19, before hosting rival North Alabama Oct. 26.
After Valdosta State owning a 25-year winning streak over West Alabama, which ended with a 24-21 Tiger win 2010, the teams have split the last four meetings, including in 2012 when the Blazers lost the regular season meeting but won the meeting in the second round of the Division II playoffs.
Nov. 2 will mark the Blazers’ first flight trip of the season. The destination will be Cleveland, Miss., to face rival Delta State. After six years of losing to the Statesmen, the Blazers finally beat their rival in 2012, scoring 59 points, the most scored by a team in the series since VSU’s 70-point performance in 2001.
The following week, the Blazers host North Carolina-Pembroke, an independent school in football. The meeting will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams. UNC-Pembroke went 6-4 in 2012.
Much like in 2012, the Blazers will close out their regular season against Texas A&M-Kingsville. The only difference will be the Blazers will be on the road. Tha game will be played Nov. 16 in Kingsville, Texas. The Blazers won the 2012 meeting, 38-31, thanks to a five-sack performance from senior defensive end Tyler Josey.
The NCAA Division II playoffs will begin the following week. All games are scheduled to change, and the times have yet to be announced for many of the games.
All games have the possibility of being moved to a Thursday night for the Gulf South Conference TV Game of the Week.
