VSU tennis splits with Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Embry-Riddle claimed all three doubles points and never looked back as it defeated Valdosta State 8-1 in men's tennis.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead as Simon Felix and Kevin Chaouat defeated Joachim Schemm and Andrew Harvin 8-1 at No. 3 while Chris Freeman and J.R. Leonik downed Sebastin Javsyk and Tammo Haake by the same score at 8-1. ERU closed out doubles as Patrick Besch and Deni Zmak defeated Konstantin Kutschenko and Mario Navarro 8-6 at No. 1.

In singles, Zmak downed Navarro 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 while David Spennare defeated Harvin 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6. Miguel Lopez Gomez claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Haake at No. 5 and Freeman topped Kutschenko 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 13-11 at No. 1 while Schemm claimed a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 win over Felix at No. 3 for the only VSU point.

Anthony Grasso closed out the match with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Javsyk at No. 4.

Valdosta State rolled to an 8-1 victory over Embry-Riddle. The Blazers never trailed in the match as it claimed the first two doubles points. Jessica Tuggle and Jennifer Rink opened the scoring with an 8-4 win over Ana Gonzalez-Hoy and Meena Bennett at No. 3 before Juliana Boehm and Laura Ubeda downed Paolo Montero and Giovanna Tomiotto 9-7 at No. 2. The Eagles got their only point of the match at No. 1 doubles, where Kristina Marova and Hui-l Huang downed Michelle Fischer and Alina Naegel 9-7.

Boehm pushed the Blazer lead to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Gonzalez-Hoy at No. 5 singles while Ubeda downed Tomiotto 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4. Naegel gave VSU the win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Hang at No. 2 and Tuggle claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Anna Lew at No. 6 for VSU's sixth point while Rink defeated Montero 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 3. Fischer closed out the match with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Marova at No. 1.

    The Blazers won their third South Region championship Saturday, beating Alabama-Huntsville 8-3 in game three of the best-of-three series at Steel’s Diamond at Blazer Park.

    Unfortunately for Valdosta State and Alabama-Huntsville, who have combined to appear in four straight national championship games, they won’t be meeting in title game on Memorial Day in Salem, Va.

    If the Valdosta State baseball team is going to win the South Region Tournament, the Blazers going to have to do it from the loser’s bracket.
    The Blazers (33-17) dropped their first game of the tournament Thursday, falling to Delta State 4-2 at UT Baseball Stadium.
    VSU will face Stillman College, which lost to No. 1 seed and tournament host Tampa Thursday, Friday at 11 a.m. to advance to the weekend portion of the tournament. The loser will be eliminated.

    Look out Title Town, another trophy is coming to town.
    Valdosta State’s athletic department was awarded a seventh Gulf South Conference Men’s All-Sports Trophy Tuesday, sharing the honor with West Florida.
    The tie between VSU and West Florida marked the first time in the GSC’s 42-year history that a pair of schools shared the honor. Both schools finished the athletic season with 29.5 points, based on the conference’s point system that gauges athletic success.

    Kiley Rusen picked a good time to have a career breakout day for the Valdosta State softball team. Slugging her first-career home run and triple, while driving in six runs, Rusen led the charge as the Blazers routed Tampa 12-6 to advance to a second straight NCAA South Super Regional Tournament.
