VSU tennis teams fall to AASU

SAVANNAH — The top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State men’s tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory over No. 24 Valdosta State at Bacon Park Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates opened the match by winning all three doubles points. Armstrong’s Jaan Kononov and Matus Mydla defeated Andrew Harving and Joachim Schemm 8-1 at No. 3. The top-ranked team of Daniel Regan and Georgi Rumenov topped Konstantin Kutschenko and Mario Navarro 8-3 at No. 1. Ninth-ranked Sven Lalic and Pedro Scocuglia defeated Taamo Haake and Sebastian Jasyk 8-5 at No. 2 to close out the doubles matches.

AASU pushed its advantage to 4-0 when No. 9 Mydla topped No. 11 Kutschenko 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, then Kononov defeated Harvin 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to seal the victory. No. 22 Scocuglia added a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jasyk at No. 4, while No. 18 Lalic topped Navarro 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Pablo Gor contributed a 6-4, 6-1 win over Haake at No. 5. No. 14 Regan closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2.

Armstrong Atlantic’s women cruised to an 8-1 win over Valdosta State, despite seeing its top player upset in singles play.

The Pirates won all three doubles points to grab the early lead. The top-ranked duo of Aleksandra Filipovski and Barbora Krtickova defeated Michelle Fischer and Alina Nagel 8-0 at No. 1,  Clara Perez and Natasha Vukovic downed Jennifer Rink and Jessica Tuggle 8-1 at No. 3 and sixth-ranked Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa closed out doubles with an 8-2 win over Julianna Boehm and Laura Ubeda 8-2 at No. 2.

Jessica Gardefjord claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tuggle at No. 6 singles to pull AASU within a point of the victory, then No. 14 Hacke defeated Rink 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 to seal the victory.

No. 33 Perez added a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ubeda at No. 4. No. 8 Filipovski defeated Nagel 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. No. 13 Kalodzitsa topped Boehm 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 5.

Fischer pulled off the upset of the day, as she defeated second-ranked Krtickova 2-6, 6-3, 11-9 in the No. 1 singles match.

Valdosta State returns to action on Friday, when it travels to Rome to take on Shorter in a Gulf South Conference match at 2 p.m.

    The Blazers won their third South Region championship Saturday, beating Alabama-Huntsville 8-3 in game three of the best-of-three series at Steel’s Diamond at Blazer Park.

    One would expect a matchup featuring two of the top softball programs in Division II to come in the national championship game.
    Unfortunately for Valdosta State and Alabama-Huntsville, who have combined to appear in four straight national championship games, they won’t be meeting in title game on Memorial Day in Salem, Va.

    If the Valdosta State baseball team is going to win the South Region Tournament, the Blazers going to have to do it from the loser’s bracket.
    The Blazers (33-17) dropped their first game of the tournament Thursday, falling to Delta State 4-2 at UT Baseball Stadium.
    VSU will face Stillman College, which lost to No. 1 seed and tournament host Tampa Thursday, Friday at 11 a.m. to advance to the weekend portion of the tournament. The loser will be eliminated.

    Look out Title Town, another trophy is coming to town.
    Valdosta State’s athletic department was awarded a seventh Gulf South Conference Men’s All-Sports Trophy Tuesday, sharing the honor with West Florida.
    The tie between VSU and West Florida marked the first time in the GSC’s 42-year history that a pair of schools shared the honor. Both schools finished the athletic season with 29.5 points, based on the conference’s point system that gauges athletic success.

    Kiley Rusen picked a good time to have a career breakout day for the Valdosta State softball team. Slugging her first-career home run and triple, while driving in six runs, Rusen led the charge as the Blazers routed Tampa 12-6 to advance to a second straight NCAA South Super Regional Tournament.
