HUNTSVILLE, Ala. —
Valdosta State rolled to a 7-2 victory in game one, but was shutout 5-0 in game two, as the Blazers split Gulf South Conference softball doubleheader at Charger Park Sunday afternoon.
Valdosta State (20-5, 7-3) never trailed in the first game as it scored the contest's first five runs. VSU scored three of the runs in the top of the first inning. Courtney Albritton doubled to open the game before Morgan Johnson singled and stole second. A Shelby Altman base hit plated Albritton and Ashley Steinhilber was hit by a pitch before Kiley Rusen collected a one-out single that scored both Johnson and Altman.
VSU added a fourth run in the second inning when Johnson hit her fifth home run of the year while Allison Coulter singled home Hannah Strickland in the third.
The Chargers (11-9, 4-2) got their only two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Kathryn Whitlock hit a two-run home run, but Albritton connected on her 10th homer in the sixth and a Coulter sacrifice fly in the seventh closed out the scoring.
Brianna Hancock improved to 6-2 as she allowed 10 hits and struck out eight in a complete game.
UAH scored five unearned runs in the second game, the first three of which came after an error allowed Cortney McNett and Mary Kelley to hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning.
VSU errors in the second and third innings also led to single runs.
Kenzi Reed gave up three hits and four runs in an inning to fall to 9-2.
Albritton had four hits and two runs scored to lead Valdosta State offensively on the day while Rusen and Sarah Vaughn had three hits each.
Valdosta State returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts West Georgia in a GSC doubleheader at Steel's Diamond.
