Weather wreaks havoc on local sporting events

Events canceled, postponed and rescheduled due to rain

VALDOSTA — Heavy rain and winter storms wreaked havoc on the local sports world Friday, and could affect the landscape Saturday.

From scheduled events at Valdosta State University to the Wildcat Invitational at Valdosta High School, to local soccer games, every outside event was forced to be postponed Friday.

After adjusting its weekend schedule in an attempt to beat rainy conditions, the Valdosta State baseball team’s doubleheader against Wayne State was rained out Friday.

Weather permitting, and pending field conditions are playable, the teams will play a single game Saturday at 10 a.m. at Billy Grant Field. If the conditions are too bad today, the game will not be made up.

VSU and Wayne State are scheduled for a doubleheader Sunday at 10 a.m. at Billy Grant Field.

The Valdosta State tennis matches for Friday against Rollins have been postponed until 8 a.m. Saturday. If the courts are deemed unplayable Saturday morning, the teams will not reschedule the matches for a later date.

The schedule four-team Holiday Inn Softball Classic at Steel’s Diamond at Blazer Park has not been canceled, nor has the schedule been modified. The tournament begins Saturday at 11 a.m. when the top-ranked Blazers host Northwood.

On the high school level, all three scheduled games on Friday for the Wildcat Invitational were rained out. The scheduled three games for Saturday at 10 a.m. are still going to be played as scheduled, weather permitting.

This morning’s matchups include: Pope vs. Howard at Valdosta High; Cook vs. Madison in Adel; and Ringold vs. Pope at Lowndes High.

Tournament organizers will announce plans Saturday morning in attempt to make up Friday night’s games sometime this afternoon.

The scheduled Homerun Derby at 1 p.m. at Valdosta’s Bazemore Field and the scheduled Valdosta versus Berrien game for 2 p.m. have been canceled and postponed, respectively.

Other events canceled Friday due to the weather include: Valdosta High’s soccer matches at Colquitt County and Lowndes’ soccer matches at Lee County.

Valdosta and Colquitt County announced a tentative re-scheduled date of March 4 in Moultrie. Lowndes and Lee County have not finalized a makeup date.

With weather wrecking havoc outside, there are local events scheduled for inside on Saturday. The Valdosta State basketball teams will host West Florida, the final home games of the season.

The Lady Blazers get the action started at 2 p.m., with the Blazers’ game following at 4 p.m.

The Georgia Christian boys basketball team will play David Emmanuel in the second round of the GISA Class A state playoffs. The game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. tip at Abraham-Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton.
