VSU flag football team finishes third at national championship

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State’s co-ed recreation flag football team, the Moose Attack, placed third at the NIRSA NCCS Collegiate National Championship last weekend at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

Valdosta State defeated Missouri, Western Carolina and Georgia Southern in its first three games at the national tournament, then advanced to the semifinals with a victory over Florida Gulf Coast.

But in the semifinals, VSU fell to defending national champion Angelo State (which ended up winning its second straight title).

It was the first time a flag football team from Valdosta State had ever competed in the national tournament.

The members of the team are: Teddy Welch, Wesley Welch, Isaac Ringer, Jocelyn Zhuno, Brandon Bradwell, Kyle Branch, Seth Ennis, Lance Jarriel, Steven Cole, Rebekah Swilley, Rachel Swilley, Logan Petrey, Jessica Wilt and Paige Petrey.

Logan Petrey was named to the All-Tournament team.

The tournament also included teams from the University of Central Florida, Texas Tech, Angelo State, Kennesaw State, Florida Gulf Coast, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Northern Illinois, New Jersey State and Arizona State.

The Moose Attack players had to pay all of their own expenses to go to the tournament.

Last October, the Moose Attack finished second at the state tournament, losing to the University of Georgia in the championship game. Kyle Branch, Petrey and Rachel Swilley were named to the All-Tournament team.

Last year, the Moose Attack won the state championship, defeating the University of Georgia in the finals.

That will soon change, though, as Lowndes has hired its newest girls’ basketball coach.
