QUITMAN —
The annual awards banquet of the Quitman-Brooks County Chamber of Commerce took place Thursday, March 11. The banquet was held in the cafeteria of the Brooks County Middle School.
Valdosta Technical College President Dr. D. Ray Perren was the guest speaker. Perren described the characteristics of a leader and challenged business leaders to humbly serve and empower their staff to be creative in these tough economic times.
The presentation of the awards was a special time to recognize leaders of Brooks County and how they have impacted not only their business but the economics of the community.
Chairman Glenn Bissett recognized outgoing chairman Jared Renfroe with Ameris Bank for his service to the chamber over this past year. The Director of the Year award was given to Janie Jones with Brooks County schools. Brooks County School System Superintendent Debra Folsom recognized STAR Student Hannah Hodum and STAR Teacher Zinda McDaniel. The members of the Leadership Brooks 2009 Class were recognized and given a plaque for their completion of the class. The Woman of the Year award was given to Folsom. The Man of the Year award went to Michael Purvis, Brooks County Hospital administrator. Crown Industries received the Business of the Year award. Knot Just Weddings of Quitman catered the event and James Bednar of Seasons provided the decorations.

Business Wish List Results
The results are in from my very un-scientific poll on the businesses that people want to see come to Valdosta. After my comment last week that there seemed to be more requests for retail than restaurants, I was bombarded this week with restaurant suggestions, so I’m guessing even with an OG, readers aren’t quite satisfied yet.

The Brass Quill Gallery
VALDOSTA — The only way to describe The Brass Quill Gallery to someone who hasn’t witnessed the majesty of its interior is this: If Alice in Wonderland could be interpreted into a modern-day building decorated by the Mad Hatter — that’s The Brass Quill Gallery. It is arguably the most creative decorating scheme in Valdosta. It is because of the business’ unique style, that The Brass Quill Gallery is a metaphorical nest of creativity for those wanting to get inked. -

Downtown Hahira
HAHIRA — The Voice from “Field of Dreams” once famously intoned, “If you build it, they will come.” Stacey Dershimer hasn’t been Hahira’s downtown developmental coordinator for long — one month — but she’s been here long enough to know, if you build upon what you have, more people and more businesses will come.
