VALDOSTA — Donna McGill-Malmstrom has found a way to combine her 20-year experience in the nail business and her passion for cooking at the new Suite Spot Eatery and Patio on 306 N. Ashley St.
McGill-Malmstrom is the manager and chef of the eatery located in the same building as The Spa & Salon on Ashley.
It opened three months ago, and its non-commercial setting offers a very quiet and intimate atmosphere.
Guests at The Spa & Salon on Ashley can take advantage of both the eatery and the spa.
“They can order lunch while we are doing their pedicures, or while they are in a transition room when they are getting multiple spa services,” said McGill-Malmstrom.
In addition, customers can get a discount at both the spa and the eatery.
“If you eat here, we can give you a discount at the spa, and if you go to the spa, we can give you a discount here,” she said.
The patio outside is also very quiet and surrounded by walls with greenery. McGill-Malmstrom said they are going to open a smoothie bar there soon.
McGill-Malmstrom is originally from Nashville, Ga., and moved to Valdosta last November. She was a musician for 25 years; then she owned a nail salon for another 20 years, and taught nail classes at Valdosta Technical College for eight years.
Three months ago, she found out that she could open an eatery at the spa salon building. She took a certificate for food management and started working on her new passion.
“So they let me make the menu, and they pretty much let me do everything, except own it,” she said.
Q: How is the food? The menu?
A: “I prepare everything myself — all the sandwiches and the salads. I make fresh dressing, which is good; I make my own vinaigrette and my own honey mustard, and I make fresh cookies every day. I make my own croissants. We also have desserts — the hot fudge sundae cheesecake is awesome, and we are going to make a bagel-bar for breakfast. We also have a ‘dessert coffee’ and ‘coffee of the day.’ If people come here two or three times, I get to know them. I always go over the menu with the customers, and ask them if they have any questions about it. I give chef samples — if they ordered something and they are like ‘I wish I could try that, but I ordered this,’ I give them samples to try out what they like.”
Q: What are the prices?
A: “What I did was I went over a lot of different menus from the downtown and the surrounding areas. We’ve got some of the best prices.”
Q: Hours of operation?
A: “The official hours are from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lunch, Monday through Friday, unless there is a party. We will be opening for breakfast when the judicial center opens. If somebody comes in and I’m here, and he says, ‘I’m hungry,’ I can fix something for him. If I’m here, and people are hungry, I fix food. We also have ‘dinner for two’ which includes a spa service too.”
Q: What would you like to tell customers?
A: “Personal service and quality food are my forte!”

Downtown businesses to be mobbed this week
A few years ago, when everyone started talking through social media, flash mobs became the new in thing to do. Primarily in the big cities, although VSU did their own a year or two ago, a designated place and time would be set and masses of people would descend on these sites, sometimes dancing, sometimes singing, sometimes acting obnoxiously.

Keep tails wagging when your budget is lagging
I have a problem. Though I am a tight-wad when it comes to spending my money, I cannot resist the calling to buy adorable toys, collars and, yes, even clothes for my three cuter than all get out fur babies.

The Valdosta Mall: Revamped and Ready for Business!
VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Mall has made tremendous strides since its rebranding away from Colonial Mall in 2007 and it’s refocus in 2008 when it made a move from serving the community to being a part of the community.
“We had taken for granted our place in the community for a long time,” said Jerry Weller, general manager of the Valdosta Mall. “We don’t do that anymore.” -
Keep your clothes looking fab to avoid looking drab
As I get older, I’m beginning to learn that there are more important things than clothes. Ugh! It pains me to even form that sentence; however, it’s true.

Business This Week: Happy Mother’s Day!
Today is the one day a year dedicated to celebrating mothers, although we all use their guidance and wisdom every day. But for this one day, their sacrifices, kindness, love, and advice are recognized, hopefully, by the children they raised or helped to raise. It might not even be those born to them, as most mothers don’t limit their love and it flows over onto their children’s friends, family members, and the children they influence in the classroom, in Sunday school and in volunteer activities.
