QUITMAN — When it comes to quality seafood and hard work, Vivian Hadley hardly has any competition.
“My husband and I are firm believers in the Bible,” she said. “We believe if a man doesn’t work neither should he eat.”
Hadley opened The Seafood Market at 216-C S. Court St. in Quitman on April 23.
Although there is one more seafood market in the area, her husband was certain they would succeed in this business.
“The decision to open up a seafood market was by my husband, Pastor John I. Hadley,” she said.
The youngest of 19 children, Vivian Hadley was born and raised in Tallahassee, Fla. She moved to Quitman in 1987 and owned the Vivian’s thrift shop before she opened the seafood market.
After several months of hard work, Hadley finally opened The Seafood Market that specializes in mullet, grouper, catfish, bream, croaker, crab legs, shrimp, oysters and trout. She purchases raw fresh and frozen seafood from a locally owned wholesale firm that delivers twice a week.
Sometimes, Hadley makes additional seafood purchases throughout the week.
She said that local restaurants buy mainly mullet, shrimp, grouper and tilapia from her. However, her No. 1 seller is the mullet.
Hadley believes that the chance to meet and greet people is the most unique thing about the seafood market.
Hadley’s sister-in-law and her husband help her in the store during the day.
Q: What were you doing before you opened The Seafood Market?
A: I was a homemaker, housewife, and a home/domestic engineer.
Q: Why should people come to your market?

A: I believe we have the best prices on fresh and frozen seafood in Quitman and the surrounding area.
Q: What are your hours of operation?
A: Wednesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Business Wish List Results
The results are in from my very un-scientific poll on the businesses that people want to see come to Valdosta. After my comment last week that there seemed to be more requests for retail than restaurants, I was bombarded this week with restaurant suggestions, so I’m guessing even with an OG, readers aren’t quite satisfied yet.

The Brass Quill Gallery
VALDOSTA — The only way to describe The Brass Quill Gallery to someone who hasn’t witnessed the majesty of its interior is this: If Alice in Wonderland could be interpreted into a modern-day building decorated by the Mad Hatter — that’s The Brass Quill Gallery. It is arguably the most creative decorating scheme in Valdosta. It is because of the business’ unique style, that The Brass Quill Gallery is a metaphorical nest of creativity for those wanting to get inked. -

BlackBerry’s Future?
BlackBerry used to be the “it” phone. Notice I said used to be. Just as video killed the radio star, iPhone killed the BlackBerry.
Blackberry has become the new “flip phone.” It’s ancient. It’s out of date and it can’t compete in the iPhone revolution of the smart(er) phone. -

Downtown Hahira
HAHIRA — The Voice from “Field of Dreams” once famously intoned, “If you build it, they will come.” Stacey Dershimer hasn’t been Hahira’s downtown developmental coordinator for long — one month — but she’s been here long enough to know, if you build upon what you have, more people and more businesses will come.
