VALDOSTA —
You will see signs and ads through the weekend for Open Houses that continue through today. Part of a national event, area Realtors are observing the day locally as well with special Open Houses throughout the county.
With home sales still lagging, and numerous houses on the market, some of which have been on the market for many months, it can be disheartening to enter the real estate market right now. However, as most any Realtor will tell you, the market will come back, it always does, and while it might be slow right now, it won’t always be, so keep the faith.
For those on the buyer’s side, you should be loving this market as you can find deals on incredible homes that were nonexistent a few years ago. This Open House weekend is not just for those trying to sell, it’s a way for those wanting to buy to see just how many options there are for them right now. If you can buy, and you have good credit, now is the time to do it.
Valdosta has fared better than many communities and there are signs that things are turning around. Hopefully this weekend of Open Houses will help buyers, sellers and Realtors match people with their ideal homes and create some additional movement on the market.
If you are looking, thinking about looking in the future, or just dreaming, you should still consider visiting one of the many Open Houses this weekend. You never know what you might find, and you never know until you try what you might be able to afford. Any Realtor in town will be more than happy to help you.
Business Roundup
Big news on the front today about Academy Sports coming to town.
The development on Norman Drive that will be built around the large national retailer will hopefully add many new choices that Valdosta doesn’t currently have. That area is going to stay very busy for the next couple of years for sure.
The Agri-Supply grand opening apparently went very well this weekend.
The former CVS location on N. Ashley St. that I asked about last week is going to be a new location for Chancy Drugs. Thank you to the many readers who responded. Chancy has locations in Hahira and Lake Park, and they see a need for a compounding pharmacy in Valdosta.
The new Southern Landing restaurant on N. Valdosta Road is now open. The restaurant is located where the former Charlie Tripper’s was for years. Local restaurateur Bob DeCesare opened the new eatery, which features contemporary southern American food.
A large transaction in today’s Homefront has me puzzled. It shows Krystal selling its property on St. Augustine to another company. Not sure if it’s going to stay a Krystal or become something else.
I’ve been in touch with the folks who are going to build a new restaurant on the former Zaxbys site on Baytree, and they should be announcing in the next week or so what it will be and when construction will begin.
The new liquor store, the Liquor Barn, on N. Valdosta Road is supposed to open this week. It’s next to Rum Runners.
For those who have asked, Larry’s Giant Subs on N. Ashley didn’t close, the name changed and it is now DJ’s American Subs.
Unfortunately, though, the Carter’s Family restaurant on N. Ashley St. closed. It was located where the China Garden restaurant used to be, and the building is up for lease again.
Also closing is Gibson McDonald furniture, due to the imminent construction of the railroad overpass.
Hopefully that’s it for the bad news for a while. If there’s anything I missed, please let me know!

The business of giving
In a 2008 paper titled, “Is Doing Good Good for You? How Corporate Charitable Contributions Enhance Revenue Growth,” the authors found that “charitable contributions are significantly associated with future revenue,” concluding that “our analysis supports the conclusion that charitable contributions by U.S. companies enhance future revenue growth ... Doing good is apparently good for you.”
