Happy, and safe, 4th of July

VALDOSTA — Don’t let your fascination with fireworks dampen the holiday spirit this week, as with July 4 on a Wednesday, most people have to go back to work the next day and probably won’t be interested in having fireworks going off till the wee hours of the morning.

And if you’re one of those who absolutely must shoot off a few fireworks, at least be careful. Every year, for anyone who has access to a police scanner, there are small brush fires and numerous injuries caused by the mishandling of fireworks.

For everyone else, the fireworks show at Wild Adventures will once again be an incredible sight to see, along with the Parks and Recreation fireworks show near Exit 18 by I-75. It doesn’t matter if you’re 8 or 80, these fabulous shows are still as much fun as they used to be. Brilliant colors lighting up the night sky; you’re never too young or too old to enjoy them.

Here’s hoping you have a safe, accident free, and colorful 4th of July this year!

Business Roundup

The new Mama June’s Home Cooking restaurant where Ryan’s recently closed is undergoing renovations inside and should be open before the end of the month.

The Smok’n Pig Express on Bemiss will stay open until Mama June’s is ready, and then it will close. The O’Neal empire just had too many locations too close together. The good news is that there are other restaurant chains already eyeing that Bemiss location.

More restaurant news but this one is still a bit of a mystery. Someone has purchased the former Loco’s building for $900,000, but not sure exactly who the buyer is yet.

Down Baytree Road in Remerton, the Main Squeeze and the Boardwalk are being displaced for a new Family Dollar store. The Main Squeeze is moving to the strip center on Gornto Road across from the movie theatres, and the Boardwalk is moving  across the street into the strip center behind Slap Daddy’s.

If you’ve been by the Winn Dixie shopping center lately, you will see a lot of construction for the Beall’s Outlet store. A $750,000 renovation/addition is underway, which will about double the store’s space.

It looks like work is continuing on the new Kirkland’s location on St. Augustine where the Goody’s used to be. I am still hearing an end of July opening time for them.

Several readers wrote notes this week saying how much they love the new Target. The renovation and expansion of the store including the addition of a grocery section, and it’s apparently going over very well since its opening last Sunday.

Lots of questions still about the seeming lack of movement on the Publix on Inner Perimeter, with only the site preparation done so far, and also still getting lots of questions about when the city is going to finally do the work on St. Augustine by Olive Garden to get a light there so that the traffic congestion is lessened a bit. Does anyone know?

The new Hahira Fitness Studio on West Main Street will hold its grand opening this week on July 4. The studio will focus on group fitness and classes.

There is a new Mexican restaurant on Bemiss Road called La Cascada which opened last week.

Closer into town, the new Chancy Drugs’ signage went up this week as the building is getting closer to opening. The Hahira-based pharmacy will be located across from SGMC on North Ashley Street.

In town, the H&S Supply Store has moved to a new location pending the construction of the overpass on Hill Avenue. The store is now located nearby on St. Augustine.

That’s all I have this week, but if there’s something I missed, please let me know!
