Business This Week: It’s not too late

Today is Valentine’s Day, a day when couples show their love and affection for one another by buying gifts, going to dinner, taking a trip, etc.

But if today is all about love, then perhaps we all should consider showing our appreciation and affection for those who mean something to us, especially if they are alone today.

Consider taking a friend to lunch, going to a movie together, or simply calling someone who might be feeling lonely and chatting for a while.

Grand gestures are wonderful, but sometimes it’s the smallest gestures that make all the difference in the world.

Making someone smile today would be the best Valentine’s gift you could offer!

Business Roundup

A new store has popped up by Only Options on Gornto Road. Creekside Outfitters offers men’s clothing and looks like a unique place.

The new Hibachi Grill on Baytree and the new Hibachi Express on North Ashley Street are both still in preparation mode and aren’t open yet, but both look like it could be any day now.

I noticed that the new Southwest Bank, which is hosting the Arbor Day celebration this week, is hiring now so they must be getting ever closer to opening.

There will be a Third Thursday night event this week in Hahira and they will be doing ribbon cuttings for the new coffee shop and the new Healing Arts business.

I was asked again this week about the former Hardees that are empty on St. Augustine and in Lake Park, and I still don’t have an answer. A chain restaurant that already has a couple of locations in town was supposed to take them both, but that isn’t happening anymore, so we’ll see.

And since this column is all about economic news, good and bad, there’s been a rumor going around the business community that there will be another BRAC in 2012 which might endanger Moody Air Force Base, so we went to the top authority, Parker Greene, and nope, no BRAC is planned right now and even if one comes up, Moody is about as safe as a base can be. So if you hear the rumors, please disregard them as it’s causing unnecessary panic among folks who do a lot of business with military members.

That’s about it for this week. Keep your eye out for the Best of South Georgia section soon and if there’s anything I missed, please let me know!

  • Business Wish List Results

The results are in from my very un-scientific poll on the businesses that people want to see come to Valdosta. After my comment last week that there seemed to be more requests for retail than restaurants, I was bombarded this week with restaurant suggestions, so I’m guessing even with an OG, readers aren’t quite satisfied yet.

VALDOSTA — The only way to describe The Brass Quill Gallery to someone who hasn’t witnessed the majesty of its interior is this: If Alice in Wonderland could be interpreted into a modern-day building decorated by the Mad Hatter — that’s The Brass Quill Gallery. It is arguably the most creative decorating scheme in Valdosta. It is because of the business’ unique style, that The Brass Quill Gallery is a metaphorical nest of creativity for those wanting to get inked.

  • BlackBerry’s Future?

BlackBerry used to be the “it” phone. Notice I said used to be. Just as video killed the radio star, iPhone killed the BlackBerry.
Blackberry has become the new “flip phone.” It’s ancient. It’s out of date and it can’t compete in the iPhone revolution of the smart(er) phone.

HAHIRA — The Voice from “Field of Dreams” once famously intoned, “If you build it, they will come.” Stacey Dershimer hasn’t been Hahira’s downtown developmental coordinator for long — one month — but she’s been here long enough to know, if you build upon what you have, more people and more businesses will come.
