Business This Week: Businesses partnering to raise money

Giving back to the community should be a set item in any company’s business plan, as the more you give back, the more than comes back to you.

Understanding that and doing something about it are not always the same thing, but IHOP has done a pretty good job figuring it out in recent years.

If you go to IHOP this Tuesday, here in Valdosta or anywhere in the country, you will receive a free short stack of pancakes and, in return, all they ask is that you consider making a voluntary donation to support children’s hospitals through Children’s Miracle Network.

The newly crowned Miss America 2010 is the spokesperson for the National Pancake Day event and is helping to raise awareness of all that the Children’s Miracle Network does to help youngsters in need.

The event annually raises nearly $2 million nationwide and is a very worthy cause, so if you find yourself hungry for stack of buttermilk pancakes Tuesday, visit IHOP between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. and they’ll be happy to help you out.

Business After Hours in Berrien

The Berrien County Hospital and Berrien County Nursing Center are hosting a Business After Hours from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday in Nashville.

They’ve done a lot of work at the hospital and nursing center and it should be a good event for anyone who does business in Berrien County.

The event is open to members of the Berrien County Chamber of Commerce and others who wish to attend and have the opportunity to network with business men and women in the community. For more information, contact the Chamber at (229) 686-5123.

Business Roundup

It looks like there is a new business going into what used to be a bagel place on North Ashley Street.

The sign says it’s the Garden Cafe, but no opening information could be seen.

The Quiznos sign is down on North Ashley Street, but I’ve been assured that the restaurant is still locating there and opening in the next 60 to 90 days.

That North Ashley Professional Plaza is picking up because there are two spaces next to Quiznos that are under negotiation right now and that should be announcing soon, filling that building up, and the owners are ready to start on the next building.

I hear there may be some movement on the Hardee’s on St. Augustine and in Lake Park soon. I’ll keep you posted.

There is a new tanning salon on Bemiss Road. The former Electric Sun is being changed to California Sun and will be renovated and reopened under new owners.

A reader alerted me to say it looks like CJB Industries has moved into the former Shaw building in the Industrial Park.

No word yet on a possible reopening of the Glo Lounge downtown, sorry.

It looks like Creekside Tavern isn’t quite big enough yet, so the owner is expanding the patio area outside and putting another bar out there.

And no idea yet when either the Hibachi Express on North Ashley Street or the Hibachi Grill on Baytree Road will open.

Both have signs up, billboards, etc. but are not yet to the point of opening.

That’s it for this week, but if there’s anything I’ve missed, please let me know!

What started as a unique Christmas gift for family and friends has turned into the go-to business for the best grits in town and, possibly, the world.
Gayla’s Grits, owned by husband-and-wife duo Kevin and Gayla Shaw, began in 1997 while grinding naturally grown white corn for personal consumption.

Over the last week or so, thousands of high school students in our area have graduated and are preparing for their next step in life. Some are going straight to college, others are seeking military careers, some are going straight to work, and there are most likely quite a few who have no real plans or idea what to do next.

  • Have A Happy Free Birthday!

The only thing better than a birthday is a free birthday. I would know, because my birthday was on Friday and, yes, I am absolutely using the newspaper as a platform for a free birthday ad because Facebook just doesn’t do it for me anymore.

VALDOSTA — Though Valdosta Shared Office Space is not new to Valdosta, it is newly green. The first and only shared office space in Valdosta owned by Gino Fina, just became the first Downtown Valdosta business to work with the Georgia Cities Foundation’s Green Communities Fund to implement environmentally friendly, energy-efficient improvements, reducing energy consumption upwards of 50 percent.

A few years ago, when everyone started talking through social media, flash mobs became the new in thing to do. Primarily in the big cities, although VSU did their own a year or two ago, a designated place and time would be set and masses of people would descend on these sites, sometimes dancing, sometimes singing, sometimes acting obnoxiously.

I have a problem. Though I am a tight-wad when it comes to spending my money, I cannot resist the calling to buy adorable toys, collars and, yes, even clothes for my three cuter than all get out fur babies.

VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Mall has made tremendous strides since its rebranding away from Colonial Mall in 2007 and it’s refocus in 2008 when it made a move from serving the community to being a part of the community.
“We had taken for granted our place in the community for a long time,” said Jerry Weller, general manager of the Valdosta Mall. “We don’t do that anymore.”

As I get older, I’m beginning to learn that there are more important things than clothes. Ugh! It pains me to even form that sentence; however, it’s true.

  • Business This Week: Happy Mother’s Day!

Today is the one day a year dedicated to celebrating mothers, although we all use their guidance and wisdom every day. But for this one day, their sacrifices, kindness, love, and advice are recognized, hopefully, by the children they raised or helped to raise. It might not even be those born to them, as most mothers don’t limit their love and it flows over onto their children’s friends, family members, and the children they influence in the classroom, in Sunday school and in volunteer activities.
