Beat the heat and the high bills

VALDOSTA — The only thing worse than the July heat is the high power bill that comes along with it. By now, you all know that I’m a tight wad, but when the heat index is breaking 100, forget about it! So, here are some things I do in my home to stay cool and to keep myself from having a stroke when I open my electric bill.

1. In addition to blinds on the windows, put up lined curtains. Especially on windows facing east and west, the sun can really light up a room.

2. Delay heat-generating activities until the evening. For example, running the dishwasher during hot days can actually contribute to the heat in a room, especially if you have an open-room format. The most common sources of internal heat come from appliances. Televisions and lamps also generate a lot of heat.

3. Install ceiling fans. While most houses in South Georgia come outfitted with fans, some apartments and condos aren’t. Buying and installing fans, especially in the main living room area of the home, is a great cost-effective way to stay cool and keep your power bill down. Keep in mind, even movement of just one mile per hour can make a room feel one degree cooler.

4. Having the lights on can give off a lot of heat. If possible, keep lights off and if you have lights on, make the switch to florescent light bulbs. While they are more expensive than traditional bulbs, they last longer and save money on your energy bill.

5. Maintain your air-conditioner to maximize efficiency while running. A dirty vent will cause a unit to work harder and cool less.

6. When you leave the house for more than an hour, turn the air-conditioner off.

7. If you use ceiling fans, keep the thermostat set at no lower than 78 degrees.

8. Make sure your fans are spinning in the right direction. Most fans have a switch on the motor to switch directions. To test, turn the fan on and stand underneath it. If you feel air on your face, then it’s in the right direction. If not, then you are actually circulating heat from the ceiling (because heat rises) down into the room.

I know what you’re thinking and yes, I am a genius and you are so welcome. Hopefully budgeteers, these tips will keep your home cool and your budget hot!
