VALDOSTA —
Have you been looking at clothes and school supplies for your young ones? Even though school will have already started around here, any time you can buy things you need with no sales tax added to your items is a good thing.
Clothes, shoes, sweaters, jackets, etc. up to $100; school supplies; and a variety of computer items up to $1,500 are all eligible for the tax-free days. Although it’s a shame that the holiday came a bit later than usual this year, at least Georgia is having a two-day event, Aug. 10, 11.
And it’s in time for most college students as well to take advantage of the lower prices and deals before their semesters begin again.
Pretty much every store in the area will have great low prices on the items you are looking for as they are all very eager for shoppers to take advantage of the tax-free days. I understand that there are several who are extending their hours specifically to allow shoppers to have more time to shop this weekend.
The economy has yet to turn around and everyone these days seems to be watching what they spend far more carefully. Parents should take advantage of the chance to make their dollars go farther on the things they need.
Watch for sales flyers and ads in The Valdosta Daily Times this week so you can plan your weekend shopping trip.
Business Roundup
The big news is of course that Mama June’s home cooking buffet opened this week. The new O’Neal family venture is where the Ryan’s was on Inner Perimeter, and the newly renovated building now houses a buffet similar to the family’s Ole Times but with a few new twists, such as the breakfast buffet on the weekends and the seafood nights. Rave reviews so far.
Gander Mountain will be officially opening by the third week in August.
The hunting, fishing, camping, etc., store is located behind Cheddar’s and beside Walmart on Norman Drive and will really add to the retail landscape in that area.
The Academy Sports down the road across from Sam’s will round out the team sports arena when it opens in early November this year.
The new Manny’s pizza and sub shop on Baytree Road is under construction where the old Zaxby’s burned down last year.
The restaurant has since relocated to St. Augustine, and Manny’s will be a new option for the students and professionals in that area.
Some buildings seem to go up very quickly and some seem to take a little more time, and that seems to be the case with the new Publix on Inner Perimeter. It’s been a bit slow moving, but the grocery store is being worked on and still planning on a first quarter 2013 opening.
The new Heritage Bank of the South location on the opposite corner of Inner Perimeter is going well, and I believe the plan is for it to open by the end of the year.
There is a new Chinese restaurant on Bemiss Road near the Harveys, and the new Pizza Quick recently opened where Buck’s Pizza used to be in the strip center near Guest Road.
That’s about it for this week, but if there’s anything I missed, please let me know!

The business of giving
In a 2008 paper titled, “Is Doing Good Good for You? How Corporate Charitable Contributions Enhance Revenue Growth,” the authors found that “charitable contributions are significantly associated with future revenue,” concluding that “our analysis supports the conclusion that charitable contributions by U.S. companies enhance future revenue growth ... Doing good is apparently good for you.”
