Business This Week: Searching for a ‘seasoned’ citizen

VALDOSTA — The committee that organizes the Greater Valdosta Community Christmas Parade is on a search for a “seasoned’ citizen or citizens to be this year’s Grand Marshal. In keeping with our theme of honoring the past as part of the city’s yearlong Sesquicentennial Celebration, we want to honor those who have been around here in Valdosta the longest. If you or someone you know is physically able and mentally willing to participate, we’d love to find some 90-plus folks to honor this year.

The parade is always the first Saturday in December, which this year falls on the 4th, and there are going to be all sorts of activities downtown and around the community that day to celebrate the final month of the city’s 150th Birthday.

Please drop us a line if you know someone who meets our criteria by sending an e-mail to either me at kay.harris@gaflnews.com or Ellen Hill at the city’s Main Street office at ehill@valdostacity.com.

This will be a great event as always and a fun way to recognize those who are a part of our history.

Business Roundup

Thanks to my readers, I have an answer this week about Old South Bar B Que. The restaurant on Hill Avenue is being remodeled and will reopen in about three or four weeks. Considering the number of e-mails and calls I received about it, Old South is being missed very much by its regulars.

If you haven’t heard yet, the new business going in on Inner Perimeter near Walmart is a Murphy’s Oil, just like the one that’s on Norman Drive.

Edward Jones agent Nathan Brown said this week that his new office, being built across the street from Coldwell Banker off Gornto, will be ready by October.

It looks like the Family Dollar that is opening in part of the former Goody’s on St. Augustine is nearly finished.

Smith Northview is hosting an anniversary party this week to mark the YPAC’s first year. The youth care clinic is so bustling each evening that they’re considering expanding the hours and opening a little earlier.

No word yet on whether the Sonic in Lake Park is closed for good or will reopen after a remodeling.

The Mongo restaurant on North Ashley is moving, slowly, towards an opening date in the fall, while Cheddars restaurant on Norman Drive looked like they were digging to the center of the earth this week on the site. Not sure what they’re looking for or what they’re planning to put that far down, but they’ll be going vertical before long from the looks of it.

Speaking of going vertical, the Boys and Girls Club gymnasium on Toombs Street went vertical this week. They’re really excited about having all those new buildings to move into this year. It’s been a long time coming.

And the Harvey’s in Hahira is really shaping up. They’re working hard on the building, with most of the structure in place. It’s being built close to the interstate on Highway 122.

That’s it for this week, but if there’s something I missed, please let me know!

  • Business Wish List Results

The results are in from my very un-scientific poll on the businesses that people want to see come to Valdosta. After my comment last week that there seemed to be more requests for retail than restaurants, I was bombarded this week with restaurant suggestions, so I’m guessing even with an OG, readers aren’t quite satisfied yet.

VALDOSTA — The only way to describe The Brass Quill Gallery to someone who hasn’t witnessed the majesty of its interior is this: If Alice in Wonderland could be interpreted into a modern-day building decorated by the Mad Hatter — that’s The Brass Quill Gallery. It is arguably the most creative decorating scheme in Valdosta. It is because of the business’ unique style, that The Brass Quill Gallery is a metaphorical nest of creativity for those wanting to get inked.

  • BlackBerry’s Future?

BlackBerry used to be the “it” phone. Notice I said used to be. Just as video killed the radio star, iPhone killed the BlackBerry.
Blackberry has become the new “flip phone.” It’s ancient. It’s out of date and it can’t compete in the iPhone revolution of the smart(er) phone.

HAHIRA — The Voice from “Field of Dreams” once famously intoned, “If you build it, they will come.” Stacey Dershimer hasn’t been Hahira’s downtown developmental coordinator for long — one month — but she’s been here long enough to know, if you build upon what you have, more people and more businesses will come.
