Business This Week: On the peach trail

VALDOSTA — I’m sorry if you missed it, but the annual Peach Festival was held in Morven yesterday. However, it’s still good even if you did because that means that the peaches are ripe and ready.

This time of year means fresh fruit and vegetables throughout our area, from peaches to peanuts to peppers and more.

You can visit the farmer’s markets on S. Patterson Street or you can ferret out one of the more elusive places around the region, such as the stands in Barney.

If you are new to the area, at least give boiled peanuts a try. Really.

They taste better than you think.

But also don’t miss the ice cream that many of the area stands make out of peaches and blueberries. It’s well worth a Sunday afternoon drive or just an out of the way home from work drive one day.

With nutritionists and so many others these days preaching the benefits of fresh and natural foods, we are blessed in South Georgia to have so many places to go to literally buy fresh off the vine.

We may not always appreciate what we have, but life is good around here.

Business Roundup

The Southwest Georgia Bank on the corner of Country Club and N. Valdosta Road looks finished from the outside, but there is still some inside work to be done before they are ready to open.

There seems to be some activity around the Hardee’s on St. Augustine but don’t know if that just means Hardee’s is reopening or if something else is coming in.

If you haven’t been through Hahira lately on Highway 122, the land is being cleared for the new Havey’s supermarket going in where the pick’in park used to be. The Harveys is just the first of a number of retail and residential projects on the drawing board for that area.

In case you missed my column last week, yes, it’s true that the Wooden Nickel on St. Augustine is now closed and it doesn’t look like it’s going to reopen again.

The new Submarina location is coming along and should be open soon. They are going into the end of the building at the end of the strip mall by Best Buy.

The rebuilding is continuing on the Supermercado on N. Ashley St. They are really gutting the building, and I still don't know if it will stay the same business or change.

I mentioned this a while back, but it looks like its getting closer — the Taco Bell on N. Ashley St. is moving next door to where the green building is now.

I mentioned the Cartridge World that had moved to N. Ashley recently, and I’m curious: did the city make them cut their sign down to make it shorter?

I keep hearing rumors about various other businesses either opening or closing, and I’ll keep you posted, but it does look like there is a new restaurant coming in on Norman Drive by Walmart.

That’s about it for this week, but please let me know if there’s anything I missed.

  • Business Wish List Results

The results are in from my very un-scientific poll on the businesses that people want to see come to Valdosta. After my comment last week that there seemed to be more requests for retail than restaurants, I was bombarded this week with restaurant suggestions, so I’m guessing even with an OG, readers aren’t quite satisfied yet.

VALDOSTA — The only way to describe The Brass Quill Gallery to someone who hasn’t witnessed the majesty of its interior is this: If Alice in Wonderland could be interpreted into a modern-day building decorated by the Mad Hatter — that’s The Brass Quill Gallery. It is arguably the most creative decorating scheme in Valdosta. It is because of the business’ unique style, that The Brass Quill Gallery is a metaphorical nest of creativity for those wanting to get inked.

  • BlackBerry’s Future?

BlackBerry used to be the “it” phone. Notice I said used to be. Just as video killed the radio star, iPhone killed the BlackBerry.
Blackberry has become the new “flip phone.” It’s ancient. It’s out of date and it can’t compete in the iPhone revolution of the smart(er) phone.

HAHIRA — The Voice from “Field of Dreams” once famously intoned, “If you build it, they will come.” Stacey Dershimer hasn’t been Hahira’s downtown developmental coordinator for long — one month — but she’s been here long enough to know, if you build upon what you have, more people and more businesses will come.
