VALDOSTA —
If the cold snap this weekend doesn’t freeze them, we will hopefully have beautiful azaleas blooming around the community this week, just in time for tT\he annual Valdosta-Lowndes Azalea Festival.
The annual event should see mostly sunny skies and much warmer temperatures than we’ve had for the last couple of days, which is great news for visitors to the festival. Held in Drexel Park both Saturday and Sunday, the event has something for everyone -- a children’s play zone, the Humane Society Pet Contest, a 1 mile fun walk or 5k road race, lots of live entertainment, and a bike show on Saturday followed by a classic car show on Sunday.
There are also numerous vendors selling all kinds of arts and crafts, handmade items, and much more, and one of the most popular features is always the international food court, with a wide variety of items for even the most selective of eaters.
The grilled corn on the cob is always a favorite and you can usually find all types of grilled meat, including gator tail. One year, the chocolate-covered deep-fried Snickers bars were a huge hit with the kids.
You can sit and listen to music from several bands, watch demonstrations, or participate in some of the activities, but regardless of how much or how little you’d like to partake of, it’s a great event for the entire family to enjoy.
The festival is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is available at VSU for attendees.
Enjoy the weekend at the Azalea city’s Azalea Festival!
Business Roundup
The new Publix on Inner Perimeter is opening to customers this week, with an official grand opening on Thursday, March 7.
The new store is located next to Walmart and will soon have several other businesses adjacent to it, similar to the Publix on Gornto Road.
You’re going to have to wait another week, though, for the grand opening of the new Chicken Salad Chick restaurant in the North Oak Street Plaza. The restaurant will serve several varieties of chicken salad along with soups and other sandwiches, and will also include a drive through window, always a bonus.
The new store, KC’s Junk in the Trunk in Lake Park, will have its grand opening this Thursday.
The new Dollar General in Nashville had its grand opening yesterday, and I understand the store has been packed full of customers.
The Bad Habitz saloon has not yet opened, but it should soon, in the next couple of weeks. It’s located where the former Loco’s was on Gornto Road.
I was asked this week about the property adjacent to Smith Northview on Highway 41 N. because it has a sold sign on the property. Not sure if the transaction is final yet, but it’s being purchased by SGMC.
And the new business on N. Ashley St. next to Mongo’s is McConnehead’s Car Wash, and it looks like they’ve started construction on the site. Sorry for the name confusion a couple of weeks ago.
I don’t have a timeline yet on the new Gondoliers Italian restaurant coming to Norman Drive by Cheddars, but I will certainly keep trying to find out all I can.
That’s it for this week, but if there’s something I missed, please let me know!

How to rip off summer vacation!
