Shopping to raise money for charities

VALDOSTA — Most people can find any one of a number of reasons to shop, but this week, you will have a legitimate excuse.

Belk is hosting its fall Charity Sale on Saturday, Nov. 5, with non-profit organizations, schools, etc. benefiting from the sale. Each participating organization has tickets to sell for $5, and gets to keep the money.

However, that $5 donation allows you to an early morning shopping pass on Saturday from 6 to 10 a.m., before the store opens to the rest of the public, with 20 to 70 percent off purchases on selected merchandise, including some seldom discounted items.

In 2010, Belk’s Charity Sale company-wide raised more than $9.5 million for hundreds of participating charitable organizations.

It’s a win-win in a lot of ways, because even if shopping doesn’t interest you or you are going to be out of town, you can also purchase one of the $5 tickets with the money going straight to the charity you purchase the ticket from.

Or you can buy a ticket for a friend and pass the savings and the giving along!

Tickets are on sale now at Belk in the Valdosta Mall.

Smok’n Pig and    Footloose

Exciting news for the Smok’n Pig this week! They were officially notified that their T-Shirts are used in several scenes in the new Footloose movie. You can see the movie now at the theatres.

The film was shot in Atlanta and apparently someone working with the movie knew about the Pig. And none of the area Atlanta barbecue shirts had enough color or cool characteristics so the Pig got called in to save the day.

Go to www.footloosemovie.com for the trailer, which supposedly two of the shirts can be seen on.

Leave it to the O’Neals to find a way to go nationwide with only two locations and one on the way. Future planning perhaps?

Halloween is Oct. 31

Although there were festivities and parties at various venues around the area this weekend, Trick or Treating is still Monday, Oct. 31 from 6 to 9, or until the treats run out, in Hahira, Valdosta and Lowndes County.

Halloween doesn’t move dates like Thanksgiving does, and although sometimes when it falls on a Sunday, it’s celebrated on a Saturday, it doesn’t automatically move to a Saturday no matter what.

There have been so very many calls and inquiries made in the last week that it needed to be reiterated again for those who might still be a bit confused.

So Happy (and Safe) Trick or Treating!

Business Roundup

It looks like the new Chow Town buffet restaurant on Baytree Road is preparing to open, hopefully later this week or early next week.

Also on Baytree, the steel frame went up this week on the new branch of Southwest Georgia Bank.

And for those who miss the Pita Pit, it is being revived, sort of. A new owner has taken over the location on Baytree and is going to call the new restaurant The Wedge, as in wedge salad. It will offer a variety of salads, soups, wraps etc. with an emphasis on inexpensive healthy food.

It looks like D&J Tires on N. Ashley St. is now just J Tires. It is under new ownership, has been remodeled, and is also now open six days a week with new services too.

Glo Ultra Lounge downtown on N. Patterson St. is apparently getting a renaissance of sorts and will be reopening soon.

The new China 1 restaurant in Hahira on Church St. is also supposed to open in the next couple of weeks, and work continues on the new Mexican restaurant    on Main St. in Hahira as well.

Apparently the owners of the Jameson Inn have filed for bankruptcy protection, but according to a press release, the local Jameson Inn is fine, no employees will be affected, and it will continue operating as it has been.

A new novelty and consignment shop is getting ready to open in November called Divided by Zero. It will be located at 2001 W. Gordon St. and I’ll keep you posted.

Close to there is a new party supply store opening called Balloons & More Party Store, which will be located in Remerton Square.

And the new Dairy Queen that you can read about in this section today is now open on W. Hill Ave. and it’s got a pretty big menu.

Finally, the Zaxbys folks are supposed to be making an announcement soon on when they will start construction on their three locations.

Last but certainly not least, for all the OG devotees, when you drive by the construction site on St. Augustine Road beside the interstate, you can really tell now that’s it’s gonna be an OG.

That’s it for this week, but if there’s something I missed, please let me know!

VALDOSTA — Though Valdosta Shared Office Space is not new to Valdosta, it is newly green. The first and only shared office space in Valdosta owned by Gino Fina, just became the first Downtown Valdosta business to work with the Georgia Cities Foundation’s Green Communities Fund to implement environmentally friendly, energy-efficient improvements, reducing energy consumption upwards of 50 percent.

A few years ago, when everyone started talking through social media, flash mobs became the new in thing to do. Primarily in the big cities, although VSU did their own a year or two ago, a designated place and time would be set and masses of people would descend on these sites, sometimes dancing, sometimes singing, sometimes acting obnoxiously.

VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Mall has made tremendous strides since its rebranding away from Colonial Mall in 2007 and it’s refocus in 2008 when it made a move from serving the community to being a part of the community.
“We had taken for granted our place in the community for a long time,” said Jerry Weller, general manager of the Valdosta Mall. “We don’t do that anymore.”

  • Business This Week: Happy Mother’s Day!

Today is the one day a year dedicated to celebrating mothers, although we all use their guidance and wisdom every day. But for this one day, their sacrifices, kindness, love, and advice are recognized, hopefully, by the children they raised or helped to raise. It might not even be those born to them, as most mothers don’t limit their love and it flows over onto their children’s friends, family members, and the children they influence in the classroom, in Sunday school and in volunteer activities.
