VALDOSTA —
Tomorrow is the official kick off of the South Georgia Classic, a PGA Nationwide Tour event held at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club for the last five years.
The event brings about 150 golfers, plus their friends and families, not to mention the wide array of golf enthusiasts who follow the Tour, or who will drive in to watch a day or two of the event.
The Pro-Ams also bring in very big names from across the South, with everyone from the University of Georgia president to executives from some of the largest companies in the region.
Corporate sponsors pay to schmooze with their clients by buying skyboxes for the main event, Thursday through Sunday, and its’ a great networking opportunity and casual way to do business. No, it’s not the Masters, but it’s still a coup and a tremendous economic boost for Valdosta, as the single largest economic event of the year in the community.
So mind your manners this week and remember that Valdosta is well known as home to the nicest people. Our visitors will be staying here, eating here, shopping here, and spending time with us, and it’s our job to make them feel welcome and appreciated.
Welcome South Georgia Classic golfers, PGA personnel, families and friends. Enjoy the special section in today’s paper about the tournament, and enjoy your stay here in beautiful South Georgia!
Calling all cooks!
This is your last week to enter the 44th Annual Valdosta Daily Times Cookbook Contest for this year. All recipes must be in the Times’ office by Monday, April 30, at 5 p.m.
Each of the recipes selected in the eight categories will be featured in the July Valdosta Scene magazine. The lucky chefs will bring their already prepared dishes to Wiregrass Tech’s campus on Saturday, June 2, to be judged.
It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that you are an exceptional cook among exceptional cooks, so dust off your grandmothers’ recipes and find one or two that will delight the judges and win you a host of prizes.

Business Roundup
Friday was a busy day around here as the new Fred’s on Bemiss held its grand opening and the new Southwest Georgia Bank on Baytree cut the ribbon on its new branch location.
I had some reader questions this week about a few things they’ve seen around town. First, Larry’s Giant Subs took their sign down at their location on Patterson / Northside in the Budd Plaza because they are changing names, and will be DJ’s American Subs now. However, I couldn’t find out anything on the former CVS on North Ashley Street, sorry.
It looks like Outback Steakhouse changed hands, but not ownership. Not sure how that works, but they’re in the real estate transactions this week for $1 million.
There is a new diner called Mr. J’s Downtown Diner on West Hill Avenue that just opened last week.
Curves Fitness moved recently to another location down the street from where they were. They are now at 351 Northside Drive, and they used to be at 4616 Northside Drive.
Ben Owens Music moved recently also and is now located at 1803 Plum St. in Remerton.
Driving down North Valdosta Road, you see that the roof went up on Friday for Exit Realty’s new offices, next to Girardin’s Jewelers.
Not far from there, Dr. Parrott’s walk-in clinic is getting a much needed expansion. And much farther from there, the former Charlie Tripper’s restaurant is being converted into the Southern Landing restaurant, which is looking towards an opening in the next couple of weeks.
There is a new restaurant locating where the old Zaxby’s was on Baytree that burned down last year. The owners said this week they want to keep it a surprise as long as possible, so they wouldn’t even tell me what’s coming. I’m sure somehow I’ll know before too long though!
And don’t forget this Friday and Saturday are the big grand opening days for Agri Supply on Highway 84, with food, prizes, presentations and Ag Commissioner Gary Black.

The business of giving
In a 2008 paper titled, “Is Doing Good Good for You? How Corporate Charitable Contributions Enhance Revenue Growth,” the authors found that “charitable contributions are significantly associated with future revenue,” concluding that “our analysis supports the conclusion that charitable contributions by U.S. companies enhance future revenue growth ... Doing good is apparently good for you.”
