Business this week: Enjoy your Labor Day

VALDOSTA — Many businesses, government offices, and students will get the day off tomorrow for Labor Day to enjoy a three-day weekend and relax.

Started as a way to recognize and honor the contributions workers make to American well-being and prosperity, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, it is a working man’s holiday. Of course, labor unions of the late 1800s had a big hand in the initial celebrations.

Over the years, it has evolved from being a day when parades were held by the labor organizations to show their solidarity to a day when people get to rest and relax. Cookouts, trips to the beach, and last-minute summer getaways are all common these days as workers opt to enjoy their time off with their families instead of their co-workers.

With the amount of time the average American spends working today, especially now with all the job consolidations and cutbacks, everyone deserves a day to relax and enjoy.

So, if you are off this weekend and tomorrow, relax and enjoy it. And if you’re not, let’s hope that everyone you encounter will be nice and friendly and realize that this day honors all workers, including you.

Have a safe and happy holiday.

Business Roundup

I was taken by surprise this week by the RCC Western Wear sign outside Boot Hill but found out it’s been that company for several years and they’re just now changing the signage.

I drove by the Old South Barbecue House on Hill Avenue, and they’re progressing on the renovation work with it set to reopen in a few weeks.

Down the street from there, in the strip mall with Heidi’s Deli and Sister’s Pizza, there’s a sign up that I think says Stumblers Food & Spirits. Interesting choice of names. Sign is up, but it doesn’t look like the business is open, so I have no idea if it’s a restaurant or bar or whatever. Does anybody know??

No one I’ve talked to in the real estate business this week seems to know who bought the Regions Bank location on Inner Perimeter Road, although I understand it’s not another bank. And the Ameris Bank branch on Troupville Road is closed, with no sign on the door to explain why.

H&H Insurance Solutions is building a new office on Greystone Way and will be relocating from their long-time location in the Bajalia Realty Building on Sept. 9.

A reader sent a note in this week saying the Quitman Harveys has a sign in front that says a new Harveys store is coming soon at that location. Maybe it will be like the new one they’re building in Hahira.

I understand Chancy Drugs is moving to the former Movie Gallery location in Lake Park. Sounds like they need more room, which is a good thing.

And it doesn’t look like the Sonic in Lake Park is going to reopen. But good news for Lake Park — the new Uncle Freddy’s Pub and Grill in Lake Park is fixing to open, so there will be a new restaurant there soon.

The reason there are what look like zoning signs on the property by Foxborough, where the McDonald’s is going to be built, is only for the restaurant to get a variance on the menu board for the drive-through. Apparently, the new county rules are much like the new city rules when it comes to development. The residents supposedly met with the McDonald’s folks this week to hammer out a few of their issues and concerns, so hopefully they will all get along.

That’s about it for this week, but if there’s anything I missed, please let me know!

  • Business Wish List Results

The results are in from my very un-scientific poll on the businesses that people want to see come to Valdosta. After my comment last week that there seemed to be more requests for retail than restaurants, I was bombarded this week with restaurant suggestions, so I’m guessing even with an OG, readers aren’t quite satisfied yet.

VALDOSTA — The only way to describe The Brass Quill Gallery to someone who hasn’t witnessed the majesty of its interior is this: If Alice in Wonderland could be interpreted into a modern-day building decorated by the Mad Hatter — that’s The Brass Quill Gallery. It is arguably the most creative decorating scheme in Valdosta. It is because of the business’ unique style, that The Brass Quill Gallery is a metaphorical nest of creativity for those wanting to get inked.

  • BlackBerry’s Future?

BlackBerry used to be the “it” phone. Notice I said used to be. Just as video killed the radio star, iPhone killed the BlackBerry.
Blackberry has become the new “flip phone.” It’s ancient. It’s out of date and it can’t compete in the iPhone revolution of the smart(er) phone.
