Another great Scene on the newsstand

VALDOSTA — On the front of the August issue of the Valdosta Scene, the stately Roberts House is shown as it’s being restored to its former glory. The oldest house in Valdosta was in the midst of a decade-plus restoration project when it burned in 2011, but the group overseeing the project has been back at it all year and it’s looking pretty incredible these days. Read the story in the Scene to learn all about its history and the ongoing efforts to save this historic home.

Also in the Scene, you’ll find fun and flirty fashions for young men and women. We have several very trendy stores now in the area, including the Valdosta Mall, and these fashions came from the newest, the Klutch.

With the VDT-sponsored Senior Showcase coming up next weekend, we also figured this was a good time to showcase some of the things in the community for seniors to do, so you’ll find a great writeup on the Senior Citizens Center. The center is a hopping place with exercise classes, swimming, pot-luck dinners, dances, a library, arts and crafts, and so much more for those leading an active senior lifestyle. And don’t forget to check out the Senior Showcase Saturday at the James H. Rainwater Conference Center as there will be a lot going on for seniors of all ages.

The Scene has some terrific photos of David and Kay Scott’s travels plus a whole lot more, so check it out. You can pick one up at The Times office or at Books-A-Million. Read and enjoy!

Business Roundup

In its first week of business, Mama June’s Home Cooking is hopping, full of diners all day, every day it seems. The buffet took the place of Ryan’s in front of Walmart on Inner Perimeter, and put another 75 people to work, including a number of folks who worked for Ryans. With a large salad bar and a large fruit bar, in addition to the extensive selection of meats and vegetables, it’s much easier to eat healthy than at most buffets. And the weekend breakfast buffet is awesome!

And good news — the Publix across the way has gone vertical this week, with the walls going up for the new grocery store. The rain this week has really put a lot of folks behind with outside construction, but it’s good to see some visible progress on the site.

The new Gander Mountain sports store is supposed to open the third week of August, meaning in about a week. Management has promised to keep us in the loop, so hopefully next Sunday I’ll have a more firm date for you. The massive store can’t be missed from either the Norman Drive or the I-75 sides and will be a great addition to the retail landscape in Valdosta.

The Drury Inn is really taking shape also as the hotel is finished out in time for a fourth quarter opening. The seven-story inn is behind the Olive Garden off St. Augustine Road and is part of a much larger development that will include another restaurant or two and some retail stores in the next couple of years.

I see a sign for a new nightclub on Bemiss Road near Castle Park, but have no word yet on what kind of nightclub it will be or what kind of music they’ll play, but they’re remodeling the space so we will soon see.

I had heard for a while that someone might be reopening the Larrys’ Giant Subs and the Wing Zone locations in Budd Plaza, but have heard nothing for a week or two. Does anyone know how those projects are coming along?

On the lot facing the SGMC parking garage that was once going to be an 11-story building, there are two renderings now, one for several small buildings and another for what looks like a three-story building. Are both going to be built soon?

It’s been a little slower than usual lately but there are always more projects on the horizon, always good news for our community!

That’s it for this week, but if there’s something I missed, please let me know!
