The February issue of Valdosta Scene magazine hit newsstands this week and is an incredible compilation of interesting stories and photos.
Valdosta’s own Janice Daugharty graces the cover, along with the wonderful array of literary works she has produced. We are fortunate to have such a talented and nationally known writer in our midst, and Janice very graciously shared her perspective on the creative process with the Scene. Janice just also released a new novel, “The Little Known,” nationwide this month. It’s her first book in a decade.
The Scene also includes a wonderful interview with Dr. Jim Sinnott on his recent brush with mortality, a humbling experience and an incredible story.
There’s great photos from recent events, wonderful photos of a recent dance recital, features on locally owned Wing Zone and Pammy Cakes, and some great advice columns.
And if you remember the January Scene and its feature on the city’s Sesquicentennial Celebration, in this issue you’ll find great photos from the kickoff event downtown in January. You’ll love the photos of the Doc Holliday look-alike contestants!
Add a little Valentine’s Day trivia and tips for romantic getaways and you have a terrific read. The Scene is available at the Times office and at Books-a-Million. Get your copy today!!
Business Roundup
There’s a new restaurant in downtown Adel that serves lunch and dinner. It was opened by two locals who are both culinary school graduates. The eatery is the 41 South Feed Store, and yes, it’s a place to eat.
The last I checked this week, Passage to India is still closed, but the sign says they are remodeling, so hopefully the closure won’t last long.
Hildegards recently reopened after remodeling, and I understand Creekside Tavern is fixing to do some remodeling and expansion of its porch area.
The new Hibachi Grill going in where Marco Polo’s was on Baytree is not yet open, and neither is the new Hibachi Express preparing to open on North Ashley Street where Maryland Fried Chicken used to be.
It looks like the KOA Campground at Exit 5 in Lake Park is opening a new eatery. The Lake Park Grill and Pub will be open this month, serving lunch daily, along with a family room for games, etc.
The Silent Ministries Thrift Shop in Statenville has expanded again, and they will still need a larger building at some point soon.
In light of the recent Olive Garden rumors, again, I’ve been asked to write what I’ve heard about some of the other developments around town. (And for the record, I only write about the O.G. because I get asked about it so much. It’s not that I mind, I just wish I had something more I could say than yes, they’re still looking at property right by the mall but haven’t found any parcel that’s big enough for them that costs the price they want to pay for it yet.)
As far as I know, the James Road retail expansion is still alive but won’t be a reality until either Bass Pro or someone similar commits.
Considering how few new stores are being opened nationwide by any retailers, it’s a waiting game still.
Also, the Drury Inn still has plans to build by the interstate, but again, the economic slowdown has slowed them down as well.
Right now, we’re lucky to have what we have, and we need to support the businesses in our area.
That’s it for this week, but if there’s anything I missed, please let me know!

Business Wish List Results
The results are in from my very un-scientific poll on the businesses that people want to see come to Valdosta. After my comment last week that there seemed to be more requests for retail than restaurants, I was bombarded this week with restaurant suggestions, so I’m guessing even with an OG, readers aren’t quite satisfied yet.

The Brass Quill Gallery
VALDOSTA — The only way to describe The Brass Quill Gallery to someone who hasn’t witnessed the majesty of its interior is this: If Alice in Wonderland could be interpreted into a modern-day building decorated by the Mad Hatter — that’s The Brass Quill Gallery. It is arguably the most creative decorating scheme in Valdosta. It is because of the business’ unique style, that The Brass Quill Gallery is a metaphorical nest of creativity for those wanting to get inked. -

BlackBerry’s Future?
BlackBerry used to be the “it” phone. Notice I said used to be. Just as video killed the radio star, iPhone killed the BlackBerry.
Blackberry has become the new “flip phone.” It’s ancient. It’s out of date and it can’t compete in the iPhone revolution of the smart(er) phone. -
Business This Week: Wishing and hoping for some new businesses
About another 50 or more readers emailed this week to lend some thoughts on the type of businesses they’d like to see come to Valdosta, and places where there are things to do for kids, especially teens, and adults are high on the list so far.

Business Wish List: the 2012 version
I received an interesting response last week to my query about what people want now that the OG is finally here.

Downtown Hahira
HAHIRA — The Voice from “Field of Dreams” once famously intoned, “If you build it, they will come.” Stacey Dershimer hasn’t been Hahira’s downtown developmental coordinator for long — one month — but she’s been here long enough to know, if you build upon what you have, more people and more businesses will come.
