VALDOSTA —
The June 2012 issue of the Valdosta Scene is on newsstands now and you can find it at Books-a-Million or at the front counter of the VDT. And it looks fabulous, if I do say so myself.
The magazine features a beautiful young lady on the cover and several more lovely, and handsome, models on the inside in a fashion shoot taken at Only Options. The models were found during the Scene Model Search, and we are trying to use everyone that came to the audition in at least one magazine this year. They did a great job and a big thank you goes out to them all!
You will also find a very interesting feature on lodging in national parks, and on the carvings and sculptings of Billy Guess. Many know Billy, but not that many are familiar with his artistic creations. You’ll be impressed!
A look inside the new Southern Landing restaurant that took the place of Charlie Trippers on North Valdosta Road is featured, and you can see some of their very appetizing and creative dishes.
It’s a great magazine with lots of photos from recent events and much more, so pick up your copy today!
Business Roundup
I need the assistance of readers as my supply of never-fail sources has not been able to come up with the answer to this one. Kirklands, the national chain of home-decor stores, has circulated emails this week about a job fair. Naturally, people want to know when and where the store is coming. On the Kirklands’ website, it does confirm the store is opening soon in Valdosta but gives no address, and considering that they are hiring for all personnel at this time, they have to be occupying a space that is vacant rather than a new space. It’s not going to the mall, or where Talbot’s was, so the best guess so far of a potential location is where the Goody’s used to be on St. Augustine Road near Hobby Lobby.
So if you know where the store is going to be, please let me know so I can let others know. I’ve received several dozen emails and phone calls this week, so it’s a highly anticipated and desired store for our area, but everybody wants to know where it’s going to be.
On to other business in town, the new Let’s Eat Restaurant is now open next to the Shell gas station on Highway 84 across from Austin’s. It’s locally owned, not a franchise, so if you can, give it a try.
Also, White Weddings is a new bridal store that will be opening soon in Summit Pointe in the same building with Home of 10,000 Picture Frames.
I understand that the Adel Catfish House, a longtime favorite restaurant, is planning on reopening next week before Father’s Day.
The new Georgia Power customer service center on Norman Drive will have a ribbon cutting and grand opening this week, 10 a.m. on June 6. The new location is in the former First State Bank building in front of Beijing Cafe and Harveys.
I’m sorry for not mentioning this earlier, as I believe it happened more than a week ago, but the Wing Zone is closed. It was located next to Passage to India off North Ashley Street and had been there for about eight to 10 years.
If you are anticipating the Gander Mountain opening, if you haven’t been by there lately, you definitely can’t miss it. The facade and exterior really stand out and you can get a sense now of how big it’s going to be. It’s right behind Cheddars off Norman Drive and is supposed to open in the fall along with the Academy Sports store being built just down the street across from Sam’s.
The expansion of Dr. Parrott’s clinic on North Valdosta Road is nearly complete and the new building next to Girardin’s is also coming along very quickly.
There’s more to come, but I’ll save it for next week. But if you know about the location of Kirklands or anything else I may have missed, please let me know!

The business of giving
In a 2008 paper titled, “Is Doing Good Good for You? How Corporate Charitable Contributions Enhance Revenue Growth,” the authors found that “charitable contributions are significantly associated with future revenue,” concluding that “our analysis supports the conclusion that charitable contributions by U.S. companies enhance future revenue growth ... Doing good is apparently good for you.”
