VALDOSTA —
Republicans Richard Raines and Crawford Powell won their respective races Tuesday for the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners Districts 2 and 3.
Raines faced Democratic candidate Debra Franklin for the District 2 seat. Raines received 7,309 votes, or 73.03 percent, compared to Franklin’s 2,692 votes, or 26.90 percent.
“It feels pretty good,” Raines said. “I’m very grateful that the voters would choose me for this job. I’m very humbled that someone would go and vote for me with such a limited amount of information.”
Raines is looking forward to staying “committed to those conservative principles that garnered me so many votes,” he said, and meeting various county department heads to “figure out what they do and kind of grow in this together.”
When Raines takes office in January, he plans to focus on the issues he mentioned throughout his campaign including “making sure that Lowndes County is the most business-friendly county in the state, making sure that the money is spent in a manner that indicates that we’re being good stewards of the taxpayers’ money (and) making sure we have the most recession-proof jobs.”
Being in the race against Franklin was an honor to Raines.
“I’m very honored to have been in the race with Debra Franklin,” he said. “She’s very bright and very passionate about this area.”
Following election results, Franklin congratulated Raines on his success.
“I wish him God speed,” she said. “I want to say thank you to all the people that voted.”
In District 3, Crawford Powell faced Democratic candidate Bill Eger. Powell received 4,855 votes, or 63.37 percent, compared to Eger’s 2,795 votes, or 36.48 percent.
“I’m excited,” Powell said. “I appreciate all the support and the turnout. My prayer is that we can accomplish the things that the people want to get accomplished.”
Powell is looking forward to “getting in and representing the people and accomplishing what it is the people need accomplished, trying to make a difference as far as keeping the county on track and keeping us going in a positive direction.”
Following election results, Eger expressed his appreciation for his experience as a candidate.
“It’s been one of the longest six months of my life and I thoroughly enjoyed every part of it,” he said. “Win or lose ... I was a winner for this experience.”
Eger enjoyed meeting with people in the community, as well as county department heads and getting to know them and what it is they do.
“I would have been very proud to be a part of that team,” he said.
Election results are not official until certified by the Lowndes County Board of Elections later this week. Officials still had military ballots and provisional ballots left to count at press time Tuesday. Those numbers will be included in the official results.
