Movies to Fall for

A primer to Fall 2012 movies

VALDOSTA — A non-vampire-hunting Abe Lincoln, James Bond, a hobbit, and the last of the glimmering vampires ... these are just a few of the movies which film lovers can expect in the coming weeks and months.

The recent arrival of “The Expendables 2” unofficially marked the end of the summer movie season, which leads to the far more diverse fall movie season. While in the summer, it seems only one or two movies are released per week, the fall often sees entire handfuls of movies being released each weekend ... at least until the arrival of the blockbuster holiday movies.

What follows is a list of several expected movies to be released through year’s end. Readers should note that the listed movie release dates are subject to change.



THE MASTER. Based loosely on the founding of L. Ron Hubbard’s Scientology, this film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as a science-fiction writer who creates a religion. This film also marks the return of Joaquin Phoenix, in the role of a disciple, in his first movie role in several years. Sept. 14.



Resident Evil: Retribution. Milla Jovovich continues battling zombies and the Umbrella Corporation. Sept. 14.

Finding Nemo 3D. Same as the original 2003 Disney movie but with 3D. Sept. 14.

Liberal Arts. Comedy of a 30-year-old falling for a college student. Sept. 14.

Arbitage. Richard Gere seeks unexpected help in this hedge-fund thriller. Sept. 14.

10 Years. Channing Tatum, Rosario Dawson realize they still have some growing up to do at their 10-year high school reunion. Sept. 14.

Stolen. Nicolas Cage seeks his kidnapped daughter. Sept. 14



DREDD 3D. Sylvester Stallone played this comic book character nearly 20 years ago. Now, it’s time for a reboot with Karl Urban as Judge Dredd, the cop, judge, jury and executioner all rolled into one. Sept. 21.



END OF WATCH. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena play cops who face gangland wrath after confiscating money and guns from a drug cartel. Sept. 21.



House at the End of the Street. Mother and daughter become next-door neighbors to the site of a violent death. Sept. 21.



THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER. Stephen Chbosky directs the movie version of his novel of the same name, as two high school seniors offer a 15-year-old freshman protection and an introduction to the world. Emma Watson of “Harry Potter” fame plays Sam. Sept. 15.



War of the Buttons. A story of young love and youthful games set against the Holocaust and World War II. Sept. 21.



 LOOPER. Fresh from his role as the young cop in “Dark Knight Rises,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt joins Bruce Willis in this futuristic tale when mob hits send a person time-traveling into the past to get whacked. Sept. 28.

Hotel Transylvania. Animated tale featuring Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, etc., but for all ages as the vampire count wants to protect his daughter from a teenage boy. Sept. 28.

Won’t Back Down. A couple of moms fight to save their kids’ inner-city school. Viola Davis, Maggie Gyllenhaal. Sept. 28.



TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE. Clint Eastwood returns in front of the cameras in this story of an aging baseball scout helped by his daughter played by Amy Adams. Also stars John Goodman, Justin Timberlake and look for VSU Theatre graduate Joe Massingill. Sept. 28.



TAKEN 2. Liam Neeson had a big hit with the first “Taken,” about a CIA black-ops retiree who saves his daughter from international kidnappers. Here, a relative of one of the first “Taken’s” kidnappers abucts Neeson’s character and his wife. Mayhem ensues. Oct. 5.



FRANKENWEENIE. In his early movie days, director Tim Burton created an animated short classic about a young boy who brings his dog back to life. With the success of numerous movies from early “Batman” films, “Edward Scissorhands,” etc., Burton brings this concept back to life as a feature-length animated film. Oct. 5.



Sinister. Film footage of a family’s death helps a true-crime writer but imperils his family. Oct. 5.

Pitch Perfect. Girl singing group takes on the boys’ singing group. Oct. 5.



THE PAPERBOY. A reporter returns home to 1960s Florida with plans to solve a murder and make a name for himself in this steamy thriller. Stars Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, John Cusack, etc. “Precious” director Lee Daniels helms this film. Oct. 5.



V/H/S. Trouble follows a group that steals film footage in this horror. Oct. 5.

Butter. A girl and a woman battle to see who’s the better butter sculptor. Stars Jennifer Garner. Oct. 5.



ARGO. Ben Affleck is already garnering buzz for his dual directing and acting duties in this film revolving around a true plot to end a secondary Iranian hostage crisis. Oct. 12.



SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS. Comedy about a writer who falls into L.A.’s underworld after his friends kidnap a mobster’s dog. Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken star. Oct. 12.



Here Comes the Boom. Kevin James’ comedy of a bio teacher who becomes a martial arts fighter to save his school’s extracurricular activities. Oct. 12.

Middle of Nowhere. A woman finds herself while trying to help her imprisoned husband. Oct. 12.

Alex Cross. Author James Patterson rose to fame and fortune with this character, which also boosted Morgan Freeman’s career 20 years ago. Now, Tyler Perry moves from Madea to Alex Cross. Oct. 19.



KILLING THEM SOFTLY. A heist, a poker game, the mob, Brad Pitt, Ray Liotta, director Andrew Dominik. Oct. 19.



Paranormal Activity 4. If you liked the first three horrors in this series, well, maybe you’ll also like the fourth. Oct. 19.



CLOUD ATLAS. The mysterious Brothers Wachowski had a huge hit with the “Matrix,” not as much luck with follow-ups. Here, they direct with Tom Tykwer a strange story that spans centuries as killers become heroes, and an act of charity inspires future revolution. Stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant, etc. Oct. 26.



Chasing Mavericks. A surfer seeks the perfect wave. Oct. 26.

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D. An alternate reality provides the answers to a girl’s nightmares. Oct. 26.

Fun Size. A girl’s big Halloween plans are dampened when she has to babysit her little brothers. Oct. 26.

The Sessions. A man in an iron lung would like to lose his virginity. Oct. 26.



WRECK-IT RALPH. This animated Disney tale follows a video game bad guy who wants to be a good guy. Nov. 2.



The Man with the Iron Fists. A blacksmith must defend a village in feudal China. Nov. 2.



FLIGHT. Denzel Washington stars as a pilot who keeps a plane from crashing but has blood-alcohol issues. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, who also directed “Forrest Gump” and “Cast Away.” Nov. 2.



The ABCs of Death. Twenty-six directors. Twenty-six short stories. Twenty-six ways to die. Nov. 2.



SKYFALL. Daniel Craig returns for his third outing as Bond, James Bond. Bond battles bad guy Javier Bardem (who played bad so convincingly in “No Country for Old Men”) and also battles for the damaged reputation of M (Judi Dench). Nov. 9.



LINCOLN. Forget the “Vampire Hunter,” this one centers on the final months of the Civil War and the 16th President’s life. Steven Spielberg directs. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as Lincoln. The script is based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s acclaimed book, “Team of Rivals.” Nov. 9.



 THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN - PART 2. The sommercially popular series comes to a close. Nov. 16.



ANNA KARENINA. Leo Tolstoy’s novel of late 19th century Russian aristocracy is brought to vivid life. Stars Kiera Knightley who shined in period pieces such as “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement.” Nov. 16.



Rust & Bone. Tragedy deepens a relationship. Nov. 16.



Silver Linings Playbook. A man returns home after time in a mental institution. Comedy, drama. Nov. 23.

Rise of the Guardians. An animated adaptation of William Joyce’s book, “The Guardians of Childhood.” Nov. 23.

 Life of Pi. A zookeeper’s son is stranded with several animals. Nov. 23.



HYDE PARK ON HUDSON. Bill Murray stars as Franklin Delano Roosevelt in this tale of FDR’s affair with a distant cousin as the British king and queen are scheduled for an American visit. Dec. 7.



Playing for Keeps. A one-time sports superstar coaches his son’s youth league soccer team. Dec. 7.



THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY. Peter Jackson returns to direct this prequel to his Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings,” all based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic books. This adaptation iks scheduled to be released as two films, with the second one set for late 2013. Dec. 14.



LES MISERABLE: This is the latest film adaptation of the muscal based on Victor Hugo’s novel set in 19th century France. This one stars High Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter. Dec. 14.



This is 40. Jadd Apatow directs this comic sequel to “Knocked Up,” minus main characters played by Sean Rogen and Katherine Heigl. Dec. 21.

Zero Dark Thirty. The hunt for Osama bin Laden. Dec. 21.

Jack Reacher. An investigator looks into a case of a sniper killing random victims. Stars Tom Cruise. Dec. 21.

Monsters, Inc. Re-release of the 2001 Pixar animated hit. Dec. 21.

Cirque de Soleil: Worlds Away. A story revolves around the famed circus, or is that the other way around? Dec. 21.

The Impossible. A family is trapped in a brutal natural disaster. Dec. 21.

Not Fade Away. “The Sopranos’” David Chase creates this tale of a young rock band hoping to make it big. Dec. 21.

Django. A slave becomes a bounty hunter with his sights set on rescuing his wife from a Mississippi plantation. Dec. 28.

The Guilt Trip. An inventor and mother hope to sell an invention. Stars Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand. Dec. 28.

Parental Guidance. A Billy Crystal comedy about a grandpa stuck watching his three grandkids. Dec. 28.
