VSU Art hosts Medical Illustration show

Valdosta State University’s halls of art take a walk down the halls of medicine later this week.

VSU Art hosts “Medical Illustration: Selected Images from Medical College of Georgia.” The exhibit will feature medical illustrations of detailed anatomy: exposed muscle, details of how tissue adheres to bone, the inner workings of organs, tumors, hearts, brains.

Think of this art as the commercial medical application of the revered fine-art anatomical studies begun by Leonardo Da Vinci centuries ago. These are works that illustrate but also instruct. Some touch upon the tissue of fine art.

Julie Bowland, gallery director of the VSU Fine Arts Gallery, believes this show will find interest with the public but will also reveal another career opportunity to the university’s art students. She mentions one former VSU art student who continued her studies in Texas and now works in the lucrative field of medical illustration.

This is the latest exhibit in a season of exciting VSU Art shows that has already included Depression-era photographs and the just-concluded VSU faculty art show.
