A mostly new cast of women present “The Vagina Monologues” for the seventh year starting tonight at Valdosta State University.
“The cast has members that are brand new and some that have been doing the show for around four years,” says Kat Norsworthy, who co-directs this year’s production with Matt Parham.
Norsworthy is familiar with the show, having performed in past VSU productions of “Monologues.”
“The difference between preparing personally for a performance and preparing the entire show is that there are a lot of factors and details that go into the show,” Norsworthy says of the contrast between performing and directing. “Also, in your performance, you only have to worry about yourself for the most part, but in directing you have to be aware of what everyone is doing and making sure everyone is on the same page.”
Sponsored by VSU’s Women’s and Gender Studies, “The Vagina Monologues” encourages “the audience to think of women as sexual beings who are entitled to express sexual feelings and enjoy sexual experiences free of shame and guilt,” according to past information on playwright Eve Ensler’s show. “They also encourage people to think more deeply about violence against women and how it affects their lives and the lives of those around them.”
“The Vagina Monologues” is reader’s theatre, meaning the script is available to the performers, who use relatively few movements, props, etc. In reader’s theatre, performers rely on the inflection of their voices and the power of the words to convey the action.
VSU has been rehearsing “The Vagina Monologues” for several weeks. Some performers have memorized the material. Others will continue using the script. It’s more important, organizers say, to present the integrity of the words rather than simply exercising a halting ability to memorize the material.
The only requirement to perform in the show is to be female.
