‘Kids Racing for Kids:’ Triathlon benefits His Hands Mnistry to inner city children

VALDOSTA — VALDOSTA — For the second year, proceeds from a kids’ triathlon at Stone Creek will benefit His Hands ministry to inner-city kids, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary.Since 2000, His Hands has been a ministry serving children and families living in and around the housing projects of Valdosta, according to the ministry’s Web site.

“We seek to be a permanent and loving influence in order to guide these families to God,” said founder Mary Corbin.“Our focus is primarily on children, many of whom face challenges as they grow up. Through weekly Bible clubs (as well as field trips, camp, and other activities), we seek to provide a constant, loving presence, and disciple (mentor) them to become the men and women that God intends them to be.”

Stone Creek swim team is hosting the triathlon, according to race director John Anderson.“It’s the third annual Valdosta Kids Triathlon,” he said. “We usually have around 75 kids from South Georgia and North Florida. It’s basically to get kids involved in the sport of triathlon.”

The triathlon for children ages 6-14 is set for Saturday, Aug. 14, and includes a swim of 125 yards, a 5K bike ride and a 1K run. Activities will begin 8 a.m. at the Stone Creek pool, 4300 Coleman Road N.Entry fee is $20 by Aug. 13 or $30 on the day of the race.

Those interested may register online at runningintheusa.com. Entries may also be mailed (by the deadline of Aug. 9) to Get Active, 3200 N. Ashley St., Valdosta, Ga. 31602, or dropped off at that business.Bib numbers and T-shirts are not mailed. They will be available at Packet Pick Up from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, and on event day.
