VALDOSTA —
South Georgia has a new choice of entertainment for birthday parties, tailgating or school, community and church events — the Valdosta Game Rover.
The Valdosta Game Rover, owned by Stephanie Motley, is a moving game station filled with four, large, flat-screen televisions, four Xbox units and two PlayStation 3 units.
Mike Montgomery, one of the managers of the Valdosta Game Rover, said the idea came about because there wasn’t anything for kids to do in the Valdosta area.
“The owner, Stephanie, was just looking around to do something else,” Montgomery said. “We had looked into doing something different that had to do with kids. There’s not really anything in Valdosta that is geared toward the kid-level. We just did a lot of research on the Internet and found game trucks in other big cities. It interested us, and we came up with it on our own.”
The Valdosta Game Rover has been open for nearly a month, but due to a City of Valdosta ordinance, it is currently only allowed to operate in the county.
Q: What games do you currently have for the game rover?
A: We have Halo, Madden ’11, Mod Nation Racers and Tekken 6. One thing we’re doing is, we ask the people what games they want. We figured the first few people we book, we buy what they want and build our library ... instead of going out and buying games that people do not want to play.
Q: What kind of events have you been a part of so far?
A: We’ve not done any parties so far. We are booked to do the Moody Appreciation Day on Nov. 13. Then we’ve had several people interested in doing some tailgating things, but we haven’t gone out and done anything yet.
Q: How many people can be in the game rover at one time?
A: Up to 16 people.
Q: What kind of things are you guys looking forward to doing in the future?
A: We are wanting to book birthday parties and fundraisers. We want to do school events. We’ve actually talked to schools about doing events for honor roll students. We’re looking into team parties, like football teams and church events.
Q: What is it like inside the game rover?
A: Inside, there’s the four flat-screen televisions and across is cushioned seating. All the systems are wireless, so there are no cords anywhere. It’s also air conditioned.
Q: How far from Valdosta does the game rover travel? Can people from Brooks County or Hahira book events?
A: If someone were to want us to do it, we would go out, but we don’t want to go too far out unless we have a gas fee. But we can’t do anything in the city of Valdosta right now.
Q: How much does it cost to rent the game rover?
A: Right now, it’s $199 for two hours and goes up from there.
