VALDOSTA —
Dr. Nic Dodson and Dr. Erin (Green) Dodson grew up in Valdosta and both attended Lowndes High School where they excelled at sports. Now the high school sweethearts have come back home to start their first practice, The Foot & Ankle Institute of South Georgia P.C.
The doctors of podiatric medicine left Valdosta to attend other colleges but ended up back at Valdosta State University.
“We did our undergraduate at different places and then came back to Valdosta State and then we went off to Des Moines, Iowa, for our medical training,” Nic Dodson said. “Then we went to residency together in Pittsburgh.”
The couple has been out of residency a month and they wanted to come back home.
“Growing up in this area, we definitely wanted to come back home and, you know, serve the community and give back to the community,” Nic Dodson said. “We hope to get involved with the hospital and sports teams and do everything we can.”
The Dodsons credit their success to their faith. Before doing anything with the office, the couple had their pastor, Wayne Robertson from Morningside Baptist, to come to the office and pray.
“We really wouldn’t be where we are today without God and our Christian faith,” Erin Dodson added. “We’ve been very blessed.
Q: Did you always want to be a podiatrist?
A: (Nic) We decided, maybe during our sophomore year at VSU, that we wanted to be physicians. We weren’t 100 percent sure what field. So we joined, I think, the physician outreach program. We joined that program and so we shadowed in different areas. We shadowed in podiatry and we both loved it. We both decided that we wanted to do surgery. That just gave us an opportunity to do surgery and treat a wide variety of conditions in a small area and spend our career treating that. With our sports background as well, in residency, we did a lot of trauma, sports injuries, surgeries on tendons, so it’s something we really enjoy doing.
Q: What are the most common things you treat in podiatry?
A: (Nic) Probably in residency diabetes and related complications with the ulcers and wounds. We also deal with a lot of sports trauma and general trauma like ankle fractures. In the office would probably be common things like heel pain, diabetic wounds and ingrown toenails.
Q: As former athletes, are you looking forward to being able to treat and help patients with sports injuries?
A: (Erin) We’re definitely looking forward to treating sports injuries since Nic played baseball and I played basketball.
A: (Nic) We can definitely relate to the sports injuries in terms of getting athletes back and you understand what the coach is looking for and what the player is looking for. Now we know the medical side of that as well and so we can put those together and make the best decision for the patient or the athlete.
Q: Is there anything else you would like people to know about your new practice?
A: (Nic) We have extended hours. We live just down the road. If someone needs to be seen with an issue, we’re going to see them that day. We know how frustrating it can be to make an appointment for weeks down the road, even if it means we’re working extended hours past what we put, just to make sure we can get people in when they want to come in.
