VALDOSTA —
Tammy Carter loves antiques.
That’s why she opened Into The Past, Valdosta’s newest antique store.
Carter, who runs the store with help from her son, Ricky, had always collected different things — plates, ashtrays and glass.
“You name it and I would get into collector mode. Lamps, I love old lamps,” she said. “A lot of this is really stuff I collected myself. We started going to auctions, estate sales, and I said my collection is getting too big.”
That’s where Into The Past started.
“(Ricky) got started in going to auctions and he started liking antiques and I said, ‘Well, why don’t we open an antique store.’ He’s the only one of my children that really cares about antiques,” she said.
The Carters opened up the antique store about two weeks ago.
Just about anything and everything can be found in Into The Past, from old keys to jewelry, antique wooden potty chairs and old Coke machines.
Q: What’s the oldest thing you’ve found antiquing?
A: (Tammy) We’ve found some Civil War stuff.
A: (Ricky) We’ve got a map from 1860. This has got to be the oldest thing we’ve got. It’s of the Confederate states, from the Civil War. I found this map online and through a map dealer found out it was (worth) about $600. We got this at an estate sale for $1 down in Florida.
Q: What’s your favorite thing in here?
A: (Tammy) My favorite thing in here is probably a bedroom suite because it’s so odd. It’s over 100 years old. It’s called waterfall, but the blue glass (on the dresser mirror) on these things make them gorgeous. We’ve got the vanity and the bed, another dresser and a cedar chest. Four pieces.
Q: What do you think is your most expensive item in the store?
A: (Ricky) Probably the game table.
A: (Tammy) We have a game table that came from England. It’s got a wood inlay in it. All different kinds of wood. It’s got a roulette at the bottom. We paid the most for it out of everything in the store.
A: (Ricky) You got backgammon, chess, checkers, cards and then a roulette wheel at the bottom.
A: (Tammy) They said it came from England and the way you can tell is they’ve got a zero and the American version has a double zero.
Q: Is there anything about the store that you would like people to know?
A: (Tammy) Just that we’re here and everything is reasonably priced. We don’t have just antique stuff, but vintage stuff.
A: (Ricky) Most antique stores I’ve been in, you think of stuff being really expensive, but most of our stuff isn’t that expensive. We’ve got some expensive stuff but it’s underpriced for what it’s worth.
