VALDOSTA —
Every little girl likes to feel special and that’s exactly what Joanna Phelps and Cindy Harrison hope to accomplish with their new joint venture, Sweetpea Party.
Phelps and Harrison worked together years ago and wanted to work together again. Then Harrison’s friend mentioned that she wanted to do something like a princess party for her granddaughter.
“I just said, Well, we might consider doing it if I could get my friend Joanna to help me,” Harrison said. “We just kind of had the idea ... if they want it, maybe some other people would want it, too.”
Harrison, who is now retired, has 21 years experience in the cosmetology industry. Phelps, who owns Head to Toe in Lake Park has 15.
Q: How did you get the name “Sweetpea Party?”
A: (Harrison) Actually part of our theme that we want for the parties is to teach girls about their inner beauty, that it’s not what’s on the outside that counts, it’s the inside. We just thought about a pea.
Q: How long has Sweetpea Party been up and going? Have you had any parties yet?
A: (Harrison) We’ve been doing this about three weeks.
A: (Phelps) We’ve had one. They did like a little fashion show, hair, nails, makeup.
Q: What kind of packages do you have?
A: (Phelps) The first princess party package covers up to six girls and costs $200. Then any girl after that is $30 each, up to 10. Then the second party is $250 and we bring dress up clothes. It has the same as the first package. (Harrison) fixes their hair and does their makeup and I paint their nails and toenails and put little decals on them.
Q: So the girls really enjoy it?
A: (Phelps) Yes, we bring little tiaras for the girls to wear and the birthday girl gets the big tiara with diamonds.
Q: If Sweetpea Party takes off, do you plan to expand?
A: (Phelps) We have thought about opening up a place of business and having parties there.
Q: When do you hold the parties?
A: (Phelps) Thursday and Friday nights, anytime on Saturday and after 2 p.m. on Sundays.
Q: Do you do anything besides princess parties?
A: (Phelps) We also do mini spa parties which are targeted toward the older girls, early teens.
Those can be done at the shop that I own. That includes a mini manicure, mini pedicure and mini facial.
