VALDOSTA —
Inside Valdosta Mall, just outside of Belk and a children’s play area is a new kiosk.
This kiosk isn’t new to Valdosta, though.
The Potter’s House Parable Christian Store, owned by Cherie and Tom Gregory, has been a staple in Valdosta for 31 years and has now expanded to include the new kiosk.
The kiosk, which opened on Thursday, includes a new, state-of-the art laser engraving system.
According to the laser brochure, the system takes different products that it offers and the machine “converts a beam of light into heat which burns the design into the product.”
The Potter’s House kiosk has a catalog with different products that customers can choose from — including keychains, magnets, ornaments, pens, cutting boards, knives, and more — that can be engraved with a personal message.
“People can celebrate their 24th anniversary, the ones that you can’t find gifts for,” Lee Andrews, manager, said. “We can also create beautiful award plaques. It can be designed with whatever statement, the company logo, any of that kind of thing.”
While the kiosk in the mall does have several books and items that are at the main store at 3119 N. Oak St. Ext., the laser engraving system is the main product.
Q: Why did The Potter’s House decide to open up a kiosk in Valdosta Mall?
A: (Cherie Gregory) We opened it because we already had the laser engraving machine at the main store and it did so well during Christmas that we got a second machine and put it out here because we wanted to pick up some of the interstate traffic, some of the people who are traveling through who are not going to come over (to the actual store). People were asking the mall management if there was a Christian bookstore there. So, we wanted to be a presence in the mall with the engraving machine but also direct people back to the main store for 10,000 square feet of stuff.
Q: Was the system very popular last Christmas at the original Potter’s House location?
A: It went very well last Christmas. People that got something last Christmas were coming back.
Q: What kind of products can customers get engraved?
A: (Cherie Gregory) Everything that you see on the shelves, the clocks, the wood plaques, the bookmarks, wood pens, dog tags, key rings. We can put anything on there for any occasion — weddings, babies, anniversaries, baptisms — any scripture verse that anybody wants that isn’t popular enough to have in the store.
Q: How long does it take to laser something?
A: (Lee Andrews) Something like the key rings or the dog tags would take less than a minute to do. Something like the big plaques would take upwards of 45 minutes to an hour. But nothing we’ve done has taken longer than an hour.
Q: What has been the most popular item that people have gotten engraved?
A: (Cherie Gregory) At Christmas and graduation, the knives. We have men’s knives, so it makes a really good men’s gift. The knives, the key rings, and the wooden writing pens (are popular).
A: (Lee Andrews) Honestly, the frames also. You can get them personalized with ‘First Christmas’ or ‘First Birthday’ so they can get them personalized.
