VALDOSTA —
Shearzz Hair Studio has only been open for five weeks, but it is already making a big splash on the Valdosta hair scene.
The salon is owned by Michelle Brown who has been doing hair for nearly 13 years.
“I went to Valdosta Academy of Beauty Culture and graduated in ‘99, and I’ve been doing hair ever since,” Brown said.
The salon is designed in a red, black, and silver motif, with black and white checkered floors and a red carpet.
“One day, I was just sitting around and thought about what I could do different to make it more elegant,” Brown said. “It’s different, and I love the colors. Then we have the red carpet. When they (the clients) get finished getting their hair done, I want them to feel like they’re on the red carpet, like a red carpet event, and everybody loves it.”
Q: What do you like about doing hair?
A: Oh, I love to make people feel beautiful, make them feel like they’re special. When they come and get their hair done, it makes them feel better, makes their self-esteem go up.
Q: So, you basically style hair?
A: Basically, I’m in the health part of the hair. I take care of the hair as well as style the hair. I can style the hair very well, but I specialize in hair care. Making hair stronger, healthier, helping it grow, I’m in that type of servicing.
Q: What’s your favorite thing to do?
A: Updos. I perfect those very well. Sometimes people come in and get them for special occasions, or sometimes they come in and get it done so that it lasts a longer time. Most of the time, they come in for special occasions — weddings, funerals, birthdays, different things like that.
Q: How has business been since you opened?
A: Business has been very well. You know how people say we are in a recession? We can’t feel it around here. The business has been so, so good. We have been really blessed with that part. I guess people are going to get their hair done, their nails, their feet, and they are going to buy some clothes no matter what.
Q: So, you do more than just hair?
A: We do nails; we wax eyebrows. We do it with the razor. We are getting into the eyelash part of it, but we do all of those services. We have a braider here, sew-ins. We have a nail tech.
Q: Are you expecting to expand any in the future?
A: Yes, I’m expecting to expand. In the future, we are going to have a massage therapist. My husband wants to open up another salon in a surrounding area.
Q: Is there anything else you would like people to know about your salon?
A: It’s a place where people can come and relax. We also have two more spaces available if anybody wants to come in and work.
