As a role model, what decisions did you make this week that will help lead others in a positive fashion?
We make decisions most every single minute of the waking day. Decisions include whether to get up on time, or sleep an extra 10 minutes. We decide whether to drive the speed limit, do our homework, super-size our lunch or practice our backhand. Exercising is equally an action that people decide to do regularly. Deciding to “not make a decision at this time” is also a decision, a decision to do nothing, to keep the status quo and to delay; any way you slice it, it is still a decision.
Decisions made have consequences – some are positive, some are negative. Not studying properly for the test is a decision; the consequence may very well be a lower grade than desired. The choice of foods consumed could very well have the consequences of a greater risk of medical complications, and therefore higher costs. The decision not to be active could very well have the same type of impact as your dietary decisions on your health, now and in the future. Smoking is a decision (and a hard habit to break), and the consequences are well-documented. Many who smoke ask to be left alone, it is their decision and it is not anyone else’s business. If one could consume the smoke and not leak any to allow second-hand smoke to affect others, I would agree. If you would smoke in private so that no one could witness your actions – I may agree. For those of you that smoke and have influence over children that you care for, you are influencing and determining what those children see, breathe and will most likely try. If you think your influence stops in the classroom or playing field, you underestimate your power of influence.
A few years ago, I decided to make some changes in my life. I made a decision to eat a proper diet and to begin exercising again. I had to decide to make time for the exercise and eat properly. The change was different; it took desire and determination. Since that decision in November 2004, I think I have led by example and have had a positive influence on a few people along the way. I wanted a higher quality of life, and I desire the same for everyone.
It is up to you. I have confidence that you can make positive changes in your life. Small steps, incrementally doing more and being the role model that people want to emulate. I know you can do it – just make the decision to do so.

The Get Active Grand Prix circuit for 2009 started on Jan. 1 and continues throughout the year. There are five events throughout the year: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving Day. In each of these events, points can be earned towards overall and age group categories. Four of the five events will have an entry fee of $5 and a cap for a family of $20; however, no t-shirts will be offered. Awards will be given out to overall, masters and the top two in each of 16 age groups, both male and female. The way the points are awarded should keep everyone close in the standings. Be a part of the 2009 Get Active Grand Prix. In conjunction with this Grand Prix is one designed for the younger folks who run the 1-mile events. Get the family involved in either the 5K or 1-mile events – you will feel the difference.
