Business This Week: New magazines out now!

The November editions of the ValdostaScene magazine and South Georgia Business came out this week, with lots of informative articles, photos and things to know about your community.

The Scene cover features the Pick-In, which was held all day yesterday in Hahira. The nostalgic gathering promised to be a great time for family, and if you missed it, then you can catch up on the history this month and see photos from the event in the December edition.

The Scene also features a look at the upcoming holidays for the various religions here in our community, as well as some terrific features, an inside look at Baytree Pizza, and wonderful photos of people at places and events around town.

The South Georgia Business magazine takes a look at how several veterans in our community have successfully made the transition from the military to the “after” life in the civilian world. Their stories are inspiring, interesting and must reads, especially for those thinking about embarking on a second career.

Both magazines are available at The Times office on Troup Street or at Books-A-Million on Norman Drive. Read and be inspired!

Business After Hours

If you are a chamber member, then you need to go to the Business After Hours this week at Affinity Health Group on Kings Way. Just turn north on Highway 41 between Cass Burch and the Smok’n Pig and take the first right.

Dr. Scott Petermann hosts the event and he has recently brought new doctors into his wonderful eye practice, which is expanding and growing. I have an affinity for Affinity since the nice doc and his staff did my eyes nearly two years ago. It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to see without the aid of Coke-bottle lenses anymore.

So if you are interested in attending the Business After Hours event from 5 to 7 p.m., please RSVP to the chamber at (229) 247-8100.

Business Roundup

Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar is officially open as of tomorrow. The newest eatery to hit Valdosta is on Baytree Road near the Valdosta mall and features, well, wings, but lots of other cool dishes, too.

The new Creekside Tavern on Gornto Road will open around Nov. 18, if everything comes together as planned, and it should. Located in the former Mulldoons building by the Y, it’s going to be a restaurant, a club, and just a generally fun place to hang out.

I keep hearing that there’s supposed to be an English pub coming in near the mall too but no word lately.

A reminder with Thanksgiving right around the corner that Honey Baked Hams reopened by the mall last week, beside Classic Art and Frame.

There is a new outdoors shop next to the Pita Pit on Baytree, but I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet. That strip center is pretty well built out now, with Baytree Pizza, the salon, etc., there.

The new bank on the corner of Country Club and North Valdosta Road is vertical now, the Chick-Fil-A close to it on Inner Perimeter is really building out quickly, and the addition on the Smok’n Pig is going strong to try and meet that holiday deadline.

I understand construction on North Ashley Street on the new strip center with Quiznos as well as the large apartment complex being built by Ambling were both sidelined for a short time due to some questions raised by the DOT, but I also understand those potential issues are resolved and everyone is back on track.

That’s about it for this week, but if there’s anything I missed, please let me know!

  • 10043o wine horse creek.jpg Business This Week: Horse Creek is a wonderful find

While a number of people have discovered the delightful winery in our midst, some may not yet know about Horse Creek Winery.
Row upon row of grape vines greet customers to the winery, which is located off the Adel Highway just a few miles outside Nashville in Berrien County. Owned by longtime residents of the region, Ed Perry takes pride in the quality of the Muscadine grapes they produce, which are handpicked only when ripe.
You can read all about the winery, which recently won an astounding number of awards at an international wine competition, earning one gold and five bronze medals, in the latest copy of the Valdosta Scene magazine.

Honoring those who have died in battle is a tradition that goes back centuries. In America, the tradition became entrenched following the Civil War and after WWI the honor extended to all war veterans.
There are several local events Monday to mark Memorial Day, and scores of volunteers will decorate the graves of veterans throughout the region to recognize their contributions to our peace.

Students will graduate this weekend from Valdosta State University and the world awaits them.
Although they are graduating at a tough economic time, it’s hardly the first downturn and will almost certainly not be the last. The abiity to be flexible and understanding that professions come and go with the needs of the times are as essential today as they have been for decades.
