New hours in effect for 3 gates at Moody

VALDOSTA — New hours are in effect for three of Moody Air Force Base’s four gates, according to base officials, after the $8 million Davidson Road Gate, the base’s newest gate, opened up to 24-hour traffic this past Saturday.

“The (Davidson Road) gate sits farther from Bemiss Road and consolidates traffic onto Davidson Road, away from a busy thoroughfare,” stated a press release from the base. “Congestion for both incoming and outgoing traffic is considerably alleviated.”

The new base’s new access port cost a total of $10 million to construct and $2 million of that figure went towards the widening of the gate’s namesake and access road, according to base officials.

The Davidson Road Gate is the base’s southernmost gate and will supplant the South Gate on Bemiss Road as the Air Force base’s primary portal for traffic.

A new traffic light was also brought online at the intersection of Davidson Road and Bemiss Road. It will aid in the management of the influx of traffic that the road will see.

The project reportedly spanned five years and resulted in the construction of a new 4,000 square foot visitor’s center, a vehicle inspection facility and a post office.

Base representatives stated that the project was the result of a combined effort between Lowndes County, the Georgia Department of Transportation, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Federal Highway and Administration and the U.S Postal Service.

Hours for the Quiet Pines Gate remain the same, as it will continue to process traffic 24-hours each day.

Base representatives stated that the following gate hours are now in effect:

• Davidson Gate (new) — 24 hours each day

• South Gate — 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, for outbound traffic only

• North Gate — 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. each weekday

• Quiet Pines Gate — 24 hours each day.
