VALDOSTA — Winners were recently announced for the Valdosta State University Student Competition art exhibit, said Julie Bowland, VSU Art curator.
Winners are Jeffrey Holly, “The Moronic Beauty of Youth,” first place; Sangita Gupta, “Moon Struck,” second place; Hannah Herndon, “Crushed Hopes,” third place; Rachel Martine Etheridge, “Modern Holy Land,” fourth place.
Honorable mentions: Stephen (Corey) Heard, Chrissy Deweese, Jeni Morris, Lindsi Jones, Monica Glasscock. Yet even making it into the show is an honor considering that 70 students entered 171 pieces into the show. From that number, 60 pieces from 60 students were selected for display.
Nick Nelson, curator of education at the Albany Museum of Art, juried the VSU competition. He said, “In making my decisions, I tried to pick works that went above and beyond the strength in technique, craft, and composition. ... I looked for works that exhibited a potency of expression, works that were conceptually provocative, works that demonstrated the artist’s willingness to explore new ground and take risks, and those that displayed an organic unity and inward economy.”

VSU Student Competition art exhibit continues through April 4, VSU Art Gallery, VSU Fine Arts Building, corner of Oak and Brookwood.
Gallery hours: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Fridays.
Admission: Free.

Annual Father-Daughter Dance enters 16th year
Three-week-old Emmaline Taylor lay contentedly on dad Trey Taylor’s shoulder Friday night, completely oblivious to the sights and sounds of the Father-Daughter Valentine Dance.
Now in its 16th year, the popular annual event is sponsored by Valdosta’s First Presbyterian Church and held at the James H. Rainwater Conference Center.
“We’ve been looking forward to this,” Trey Taylor said. “When we first got pregnant, (my wife Sheya and I) looked to see if she would be here in time for the Father-Daughter Dance.” -

VALDOSTA — Editing Mozart isn’t for sissies.
