HOMERVILLE — The next scheduled seminar for the Huxford Genealogical Society is 8 a.m., Aug. 9, Homerville Exchange Club. The seminar will begin with coffee, donuts, and registration.
Christine Wiseman, preservation services manager, the Georgia State Archives, will serve as a lecturer and workshop leader in preservation techniques and processes.
Wiseman stated this workshop will be geared to courthouse record management, library staff and personal family collections of records. She is sending Tina Mason Seetoo to lead this seminar. Seetoo has been the conservator at the Georgia Archives in Morrow, since January 2007.
Prior to coming to the archives, she worked in the preservation services department of the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET) for eight years. She started in 1999 as the preservation field services officer, and was promoted to manager of preservation services in October 2005. She received an MLIS and a certificate of advanced study in conservation from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining SOLINET, she spent a year working in the Book Conservation Lab of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries.
She lectures on a wide range of preservation topics and is active in the ALA Preservation and Reformatting Section, the American Institute for Conservation, Society of American Archivists, and the Society of Georgia Archivists.
Her lecture and workshop is entitled: “A Little Goes a Long Way: Prolonging the Life of Your Collections.” This seminar is an introduction to the basic principles of preservation. The lecture and discussion will outline common sources of damage to collections and how to recognize and prevent deterioration of paper-based materials.
Attendees will learn ways to slow deterioration and tips on purchasing non-damaging enclosures.
The lecture will highlight current preservation best practices including a discussion of non-damaging repairs and reformatting for preservation and access.
Luncheon will be provided at this workshop. Reservations are required and the cost has been limited to $30 for members and $35 for guests. Reservations should be received no later than July 15.
