Family seeks help with funeral expenses

Staff Reports

VALDOSTA — A local family is seeking help with funeral expenses.

Sylvester Williams, 67, passed away Tuesday following a lengthy battle with colon cancer, says his wife, Bridgett Williams.

“That was my husband and my heart,” she says.

Sylvester Williams’ wishes were to be buried in his hometown of Crystal River, Fla. New Serenity Memorial Funeral Home, Crystal River, will handle arrangements once the family has secured funding.

The Williams family has three children, all in their early or pre-teens.

Sylvester Williams was a truck driver for about a half century, according to a 2006 article in The Valdosta Daily Times on his battle against colon cancer.

He kept a positive attitude about life even as he battled cancer. “I don’t think in terms that (the cancer) is going to kill me,” Sylvester Williams said in 2006. “The way I feel, I think you can live a normal life. I come from an old-time sanctification church — If it’s not your time to go, you’re not. I don’t sit around and mope over it.”

At that time, the family was seeking funds to offset medical costs. Now, the same bank account used to raise money for medical bills will be used to raise funds for a funeral. Donations may be made to the Sylvester Williams Medical Needs Fund, Bank of America.
