VALDOSTA — Local author Willie Houseal is scheduled to discuss his latest book next week at the Valdosta-Lowndes County Library.
That book is “The Power of Positive Self-Esteem: Developing, Implementing and Sustaining.” This volume is a realization that he had learned more about the possibilities of developing positive self-esteem since publishing his first book, “The Power of Self-Esteem (Using It All to Get It All),” in 1998.
Released in 2008, the second book incorporates ideas from the 1998 volume but expands on those thoughts through Houseal sharing experiences from his life and observations as well as research.
A Valdosta native, Houseal’s experiences include earning a master’s degree in public administration from Pepperdine University, a master’s and specialist degrees from Valdosta State University, and his doctorate in education leadership from NOVA University. He served with the Air Force, was an educator for 27 years, and was a Valdosta City Council member for several years in the 1980s.
He and wife Pat have three children, Willie Jr., Yorshia, and Terry, and grandchildren.
The first book, Houseal notes, dealt with “coming to terms with ‘self-esteem’ in its purest form.” The new book “defines self-esteem based on personal experience, common knowledge, and documented research as we anticipate life’s challenges. Challenges can be met with confidence or the lack of it. The means by which we conduct ourselves provide a vivid picture of how we feel about ourselves.”
Willie Houseal is scheduled to discuss and sign his book, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, Valdosta-Lowndes County Library, 300 Woodrow Wilson Drive.

Annual Father-Daughter Dance enters 16th year
Three-week-old Emmaline Taylor lay contentedly on dad Trey Taylor’s shoulder Friday night, completely oblivious to the sights and sounds of the Father-Daughter Valentine Dance.
Now in its 16th year, the popular annual event is sponsored by Valdosta’s First Presbyterian Church and held at the James H. Rainwater Conference Center.
“We’ve been looking forward to this,” Trey Taylor said. “When we first got pregnant, (my wife Sheya and I) looked to see if she would be here in time for the Father-Daughter Dance.” -
