VALDOSTA — Despite difficult economic conditions, companies continue to expand and create new jobs in Lowndes County, as was discussed during the Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority regular meeting Tuesday.
The staff continues to work with Outsource Logistics on the expansion of its existing facility in Perimeter East Industrial Park. The company has already acquired the Postle building adjacent to its facility and plans to purchase new equipment, an overall investment of approximately $1.8 million. The expansion will create 12 new jobs. Authority members approved a 10-year tax schedule to apply to the newly acquired facility.
The authority also approved the sale of 5.284 acres, at $15,000 per acre, to Bearden Trucking for the expansion of its facility in Perimeter East Industrial Park. The staff had recently met with Robert Bearden about the acquisition of land south of the existing facility. The expansion will create 30 new jobs.
In other business, the authority reported a successful Brokers and Developers luncheon last month. The luncheon was held to introduce and demonstrate the functions of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) portion of its newly-designed Web site. Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority Assistant Director Vicki Hughes said that realtors have already begun to populate the site.
A reception for the unveiling of the Web site is scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners’ meeting room. During the reception, the authority will give a short presentation then set up computers for guests to explore the site.
Other items discussed were:
-- The assessment of property values in Lowndes County. Lowndes County Assessor Earl Wetherington made a presentation about how property is assessed based on the Official Code of Georgia. Wetherington emphasized the fact that the Assessor’s Office has nothing to do with property taxes and invited attendees to visit www.qpublic.net/ga/lowndes to access property records in Lowndes County.
-- Project Butter. The staff is working with a commercial baking company that is interested in purchasing the Organic Milling facility on Forrest Street. The company previously had a baking operation at that location. The staff provided the company with a proposed economic incentive package, which is pending the company’s commitment to make a $12 million investment for upgrades on the facility and manufacturing equipment, as well as create 250 new jobs in Lowndes County.
-- Project Loaves. The staff working with a West Coast specialty baking company that plans to establish an operation in the Southeastern U.S. The company has considered the Organic Milling facility but is also considering building on land where there is no need to make improvements. The staff has met with the company twice to look at the Organic Milling facility and proposed site locations for construction. The project is a $9.2 million investment and will create 65 new jobs.
