No arrests in Sparks slaying

SPARKS — Authorities continue to investigate the alleged homicide of a 72-year-old Sparks game room owner that occurred May 8.

Contrary to earlier reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Russell Mansfield said Tuesday that witnesses are still being questioned about the homicide, but no suspects have been identified.

Other sources previously indicated that two Adel residents were arrested in Tifton Saturday for their alleged involvement in the homicide.

Mansfield said that there may be some confusion between the Sparks incident and an armed robbery that occurred in Adel the same night. He also mentioned that authorities are looking at the possibility of the incidents being connected but have nothing to support that at this time.

At approximately 7:53 p.m. Friday, Cook County sheriff’s deputies and Sparks police officers were dispatched to Busters Game Room on Adams Street in Sparks and discovered a dead man’s body inside the building, according to the GBI.

The man was identified as the game room owner, James “Buster” Statum of Sparks, in an article from The Tifton Gazette.

The investigation is being handled by the Sparks Police Department, Cook County Sheriff’s Office and GBI. The South Georgia Drug Task Force and Adel Police Department have also assisted.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Sparks Police Department at (229) 549-8211, Cook County Sheriff’s Office at (229) 896-7471, or the GBI Douglas Office at (912) 389-4103.
