VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Fire Department will smoke Boston Butts on Friday to sell to the public in an effort to raise money to help burn victims.
Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation. The GFBF supports Camp Oo-U-La, Georgia’s first and only camp exclusively for burn-injured children. They also support burn units in at least two of Georgia’s major hospitals.
Camp Oo-U-La is completely funded by the foundation and free to campers. The camp allows young burn victims at least one week out of the year to just be kids, with others who have experienced the same trauma. Since all the campers and many of the Camp Oo-U-La staff are burn survivors, just about everyone has scars.
Boston Butt tickets are $25 and can be purchased at all Valdosta fire stations, or customers can go to Station No. 1 or Station No. 2 on Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and pick up a pre-cooked Boston Butt while supplies last. Station No. 1 is located at 106 S. Oak St. and Station No. 2 is located at 1350 E. Park Ave.
Last year, the Valdosta Fire Department’s Boston Butt sale raised over $800, said Battalion Chief John Wisenbaker of the VFD.
The Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation is a non-profit organization with a threefold mission: To educate the public about burn awareness and prevention, to support medical facilities for burn victims in Georgia, and to assist burn survivors in their recovery.
